Hey guys,

New to semi auto precision. Just recently finished an upper with a Rainer Arms 223 Wylde 18" 1:8 barrel.
Waiting on a 1-8x to mount and then I'll be punching paper.

I'm curious as to what is the best bang for buck off the shelf. I know that FGMM is a great round, and I shoot it in my 308s, but with the semi auto nature of the AR I'm looking for something a bit more cost effective than $1/round or more.

I know ultimately I need to put rounds down the barrel to know for sure, but I'm just curious if anyone can recommend some match grade ammo that won't break the bank.
I've eyed up Provide, and Fiocchi.

Thanks guys, gals, and others.

Thanks I'll have to pick up a box.
Not worried about steel doing damage, more like the reliability in feeding, but I'd assume Hornady would have them polished or something.

+1 I like the Hornady Superperformance Match 75 also.

+1..Hornady Steel Match is the cheapest decent LR 5.56/.223.

Best of all, it'll work in .223 Wylde and Nitrided barrel (cheap Steel ammo won't). I shot it through several of my .223 Wylde and Nitrided barrels and never had any problem. Sportsman Guide usually has a box of 50 for $20.

I just picked up some of the IMI 77gr SMK ammo Midway had on sale.  Not as cheap as the stuff you guys are talking about.  $.56/round with free shipping

How about Magtech 77g OTM?
This stuff is fairly priced at $.58 a round and people are
saying it shoots well.

I hear Wolf Gold is a good budget precision ammo.

I've tried them all for my 18" SPR, for price/performance you can't beat Defender Ammunition 77gr SMK MK262.  Very consistent subMOA load.

Best ammo for the money......

I can't say for sure if your barrel will like them, but my JP 20" with Wylde chamber loves Defender 69gr .223 SMK. I would rank this round ahead of all Hornady, Federal and Black Hills in my experience. I fed that JP over 20 different makes of match ammo. It currently costs 61.6 cents per round. The only ammo that I found that beats it is Copper Creek Cartridge Company 77 gr Berger OTM...but that is more of a custom load and about $1 per round.

5 rounds

For 60 cents a round you cant beat CBC Magtech 77 grain sierra match king.  Ive shot couple thousand now at 500-1000 yards.  556 at that range always challendging but its high speed helps a bit with wind drift.  (2870 fps in my 20 inch 1:8 wylde Lothar Walther barrel).

I use this, as well.  It's on the slow side (2580, iirc) but not having to chase brass during a course or match s priceless.

I’ve shot sub .5moa with IMI 77gr razor core out of a larue. It’s good stuff.
