Just curious what some of you have seen. My 22” Bartlien 6.5 Creedmoor has gone from 2,640 and 2,660 to 2,715 and 2,745 for two different loads. Barrel started out new and is now at 457 rounds. Not complaining, just curious how much speed you have seen barrels gain.

The last bartlein on my ELR rifle sped up from 3170 to 3220 at right around 155 rounds thru it..the replacement has 55 down it and the speed is still climbing it went from 3197 for the average of the first 5 rounds, the last 5 were 3215.... Thats shooting the 230 grain HT Bergers, but the new barrel should pick up more since I went from 28" on the last one to 30" on this new one......

Once there it's not going to go up again so you are pretty much where you will be now at 457 rounds. |

Just curious because I tend to choose a rifle based on a bullet I want to load and that bullet is on my short list. |

Yes, this is on my 300RUM...it seems like on the average most 300 rums will launch the 230 Bergers right around 3050 to 3150fps.....some go a bit faster..I ran mine all the way up to 3350fps before seeing any signs of pressure, but that was with under 55 degree temps at sea level... I do have some of the new berger 245 bullets for it, will be working up a batch just to see how they are versus the 230's.... |

What's the temperatures you were shooting in when you had these differing velocities?

This is a common phenomenon. Most barrels build speed until 150 +/- rounds have been fired, then stabilize.

Perfectly normal depending on your cleaning regime.
Usually 500-100 rounds in depending on projectile choice and cartridge selection you will see it stabilize. |

This spurs an interesting question I hadn't thought of before...
The same loads are often faster in the summer and slower in the winter as the temps change. For a new barrel, if the spread of average velocities between the coldest days and warmest days is X, then does X get smaller as the barrel gets broken in with a few hundred rounds downrange, or does that range just shift as the average speed shifts? In other words, even as average velocities shift over time, does the total extreme spread "band" shift with it or does it get tighter? I realize this is a largely theoretical question, but I figured you guys had shot long enough with good barrels to maybe have noticed. |
