Didn't even know they made a 44 mag carbine. Sounds pretty cool.

Had one for a while. Nice gun. Don’t use low power loads or any cast bullets. Standard JSP factory or Jacketed HP loads are good. It takes a fair amount of gas to run one so keep in mind if you reload. The one I had shot well, but with the cult status they have achieved it was worth too much for me to mark up hunting. My state changed laws to allow straight wall rifles so I built a 450 AR for a semi auto deer gun, so I made good money on the Ruger. Take car of it and it will be good. Only problem is there are almost no replacement parts available on a failure.

They don't anymore and they are hard to find.  Great little guns though.

They made the Deerfield carbine, the 96/44 lever action, and the 77/44 bolt action.

Yes I’m talking about the Ruger Deerslayer or Deerfield. Orginal was made from the 1960’s to 1985. Then ruger cane out with a magazine fed semi auto 44mag called the 99/44? Took the same mags at the 77/44 & the levergun.

Regular plain jane 240 jhp loads are "okay".  I used a 44 mag Marlin 1894.  Same ballistics.  I did find that some 240 jhp bullets opened a tad fast for my liking.  I think the extra velocity out of the carbine barrel ( compared to a 6 or 8" revolver) opens a jhp a bit too fast.  Ive seen jacket separation on something as small as a woodchuck...

I preferred 240 jacketed SOFT points....

I bought a Deerfield carbine new in '99 or 2000, and  hunted with it for about 4 years. It's a great rifle inside of 100 yards with 240 grain JSP's. I did take a deer at close to 200 with it, but the bullet drop at that distance was something like 12". Amied over the front shoulders, said a prayer, and took the shot.

I've still got my Deerfield too, no desire to part with her. I'll let my sons use it when they start hunting.

Back in the 1980s, long after Ruger dropped the 10/22 International, I saw a matched set of 10/22 and Deerfield Internationals.
Dealer wanted $600 for the pair in minty condition.

$600 in the '80s was serious money, for me at least.

In 1964 C. W. Shelton used a Ruger .44 carbine to harvest "Big Red" here in the county I grew up in. 1964 was also Kentucky's first statewide deer hunting season in over 40 years.

I have one and have killed deer with it...…..light and easy to carry but mine doesn't seem to be real accurate...…...it is probably good enough but l like a gun to shoot pretty tight groups,

The last couple of years I have been using my 450 Bushmaster.

Yes, my first deer rifle when I was 14. Deluxe model with peep sights. Mine shoots well, so well
that first season on the first day I shot a 4x4 sigh post in half with one shot. Followed by my father
slapping me in the back of the head with authority. Should have been put in the concision protocol.
Used 240gr western super X hollow soft points back then....

I have on that was handed down to me.
I used 240 gr JSP's but on hogs only. It is quite devastating.
I also found after a long search, a guy in Northern MN that makes a picatinny rail for them too.
I've mounted NV on it but due to the fireball at night you only get one shot pretty much.

Mine was stolen the Saturday before Christmas in 1986.  Had it since the mid-70's.  Great little rifle.

I miss it terribly.
