I just heard from the CMP, Garands are in route, and should be here on/before Tuesday of next week.

Opening weekend is next Saturday, and my 40th birthday is Thursday. I leave Wednesday afternoon for the deer camp.

Please keep me in your thoughts that they get here in time for the hunt.

I can see that barrel shaking now when you try to raise it over a branch....

Luckily, my hunting buddies are older than me.  I think one even used a Garand as his issued rifle.  I'll have to check the gun's date code, and his.

Garands arrived yesterday.  After some cleaning, and lubing, I test fired them both today.

Both functioned as expected.

I purchased two boxes of shells.  Winchester 150gr Super X, and Winchester 150gr Power Max Bonded.

They both fed and functioned properly.

I plan to hunt with the bonded rounds.

Can't wait till next weekend.

TRG's, not the deer's. Evenings in deer camp can be brutal!

I started to bring mine yesterday, just for S&Gs, but I don't think I have anything but FMJ ammo for it. If anybody managed to destroy an op rod with a single hunting round, it would be me.

Well here is the rundown of the guns.

One is a 1954 receiver, 1942 bolt, trigger assembly group is from SA, Winchester and International harvester. 1955 barrel.  Really pretty wood. Her name is Ginger.

First test firing was on to paper at 25 yds.  resting on a bench, hand supported.  All rounds landed in a 2" circle.  Fit and function was fine, no jams, hangups, FTE, FTF, etc.  8 rounds fired.

The next day I took her back to 90yds.  Same ammo

First three round group, sight at factory zero, was 6" low and 6" right.  I adjusted her sights, and fired three more rounds

She dialed in at 90 yds (range is only that long) and shot an impressive 1.25" MOA 3 round group.

WInchester Super-X, 150 grain soft points.

The next Garand is a 1955 receiver, wit ha 1945 bolt, all SA trigger. 1954 barrel. Her wood grain is not as decorative, she is called Maryanne.

She also held a 2" group at 25 yds, 8 rounds fired, no FTEs, FTF, etc.  

At 90 yards, she also hit 4-6" right and 4-6" low for her first 3 rds at 90 yds..

I adjusted her sights and fired 3 more rnds.  She was still not on zero.  I adjusted her a second time, and she fired a solid 1" group, of 4 rounds.

Both guns turned in good results.  I did not measure the group, but by placing the pad of my thumb on the center of the impact, all rounds were touching the outline of my thumb.

Not bad for 50 year old women with some parts having even higher mileage.

That is a sad commentary on how close I follow deer hunting.

I seldom pay much attention to it myself.  I really prefer hog hunting.

The "ping" of the empty enbloc is certain to give your position away.

They will rush you when they hear it.

The season is a bit easier to keep track of, too.

I got TWO of them!  I plan to toss an empty clip, then wait for them to try and storm my position.
