Ideally I'd like to be around $300.

I realize that's probably asking too much, but suggest away!

I purchased the Anytone AT-588UV but after reading countless reviews of how poor the RX quality is on it, I figured I'd throw it back and try again.

It is around $375. Call MTC and see what they have them going for.

You won't be sorry.

I really want to.

Frankly, I'm embarrassed about how little I really know.

I passed the Tech without really understanding much of it.

I've learned, thanks to TBS, how to do basic stuff, like program my HTs and Mobiles, but that's about it.

I had a guy at work start asking me about PL codes, and offsets, and I remembered just how little I knew.

That's what I'm leaning toward, mainly because it's in my price range, and can RX on narrow band, which is nice.

So here is what I'm using it for:

I'm a prepper, so SHTF comms is on my list.

I also help out the locals (mostly elderly at my church) if/when trees fall, and I run around my farm like a loon.

I'd like to have xband repeat because I have a box full of UV5Rs that I want to be able to hand out.

I just picked up a 1999 GMC pickup and so rather than transfer my old mobile unit (not dual band or xband repeat) I figured I'd put a nicer one in.

I don't use the local repeater because the guys on there are real jerks.

Just look at me, I passed the general and I am clueless in too many aspects.

I think the added price of the Kenwood is well made up in the programming software it comes with (free). Someone on here has a link to Amazon to get the cable for around $12.

My main hesitation about the Kenwood is that it won't listen on narrow band.

I don't use that feature much, but when I do, it's pretty important.

That being said, I can always bring a HT with me that does listen.

None of us knew anything about ham before we knew it.

Just look at me, 2= years ago I passed my tech and has only done a few SSB contacts.  Now, I'm just back from a Gov't funded 18 month all mode DXpedition.

You don't "need" a speaker, that said you should get one. However I just use a $10 truck stop special in my truck.

This can be used in place of the Kenwood PG-5G cable used to program Kenwood's TM-V71 ham radio. That cable is normally 30+ dollars, (plus shipping and/or tax), this was 13 bucks shipped to my door, is twice as long, and works exactly the same.

I was already looking and don't see one.  Just get a USB - Serial adapter with a FTDI chipset that you trust.

You guys have me wanting to get the TM-V71A and sell my FT-7800R that works so well but I find so difficult to use without the manual.

I use serial to USB on every thing ham (except my KX3 ) I haven't had any problems.

RT systems has good software, but they use cables with unique IDs and their software only works with that cable and vice versa.

Ok, more questions.

I bought an antenna that came with a mount that would attach to a toolbox or similar.

Not my pic, but basically the same setup.

How much signal would I lose by attaching it so close to the cab like here? (yellow is where I was thinking)

So based on the fact that the car trunk mount is below the "cab" horizon, I don't see a problem with mounting it like this:
