ideal placement is center roof....hard for me and the 3/4 ton 4x4
virtually of our Antennas are Compromises...meaning to get the ideal is a near impossibility...we just do the best we can.
is the toolbox ideal? not really, but will it work-yes.

I get it now, thanks!

Heck my mount kit included a fender mount as well.

I can always move it if my reception is crap.

what antenna & mount did you score? (great rig choice BTW!)

I have a 500c. I really like it. I do however keep a 5/8 wave under my seat for when I am in the sticks.

I bought an Austin for my '99 'burb (that I think is blown-up) it's sitting in the mailer tube still-though it looks like it'd work well on an M1 (insanely built)

eta:
one of these would work on your toolbox and may save some $

Same idea. This is the one I have. It is a little long for town IMO. If you are using a NMO (like you should) you can switch the two out pretty quick. I don't know if the 5/8 transmits any better but it does hear better.

It does.

antenna gain works eqully well on transmit and receive

...5/8th 2meter NMO is an excellent antenna....but it WONT WORK on 440mhz

for dual band, something like this works very well.

Can you give me an example of what's on 440?

I'm still trying to figure all of this out.

I only TX on a few repeaters, and listen on a few public service channels.

It really depends on your local area.

In some areas 440 is dead, and 2meters is more active, others, 440 is more active.

Listening on narrow band also means being able to set the correct frequency into the memory. The Kenwood's don't do 2.5 khz steps IIRC. So you can't program 155.4525 into memory.

I see my pic went haywire. I think I moved it into a bucket or something.

Anyway.

I got my radio and remote mount kit. I'm very disappointed.

Apparently the Mic must attach directly to the base unit? Fuck me. That screws up everything I had planned.

It's just a CAT-5.

That isn't my understanding:

Advice: These modular cables are NOT replaceable with standard networking (CAT5/CAT6) cables. Kenwood uses an unshielded ground wire for the whole length of these extension cables to absorb the RFI and carry it to ground. You will get a tremendous amount of added noise if you use a networking cable instead. This kit is what you need.

I already knew that. I also knew that the other one I returned had it that way as well.

I assumed the kenwood would as well.

It's my fault. I should have checked.

Don't tell that to mine...

I did snap on a couple radio shack ferrites though. Don't know if they really made that much of a difference.

Did you run it parallel to the DC power?

So this isn't a big deal. I've got 1000' of cat 5e and a few hundred connectors laying around the house.

Thanks guys!

It's running under my carpet next to the radio's power wires, amplifier power wires, amplifier rca cables.

If for some reason it doesn't work for your situation you are out a couple bucks vs 65.

Use a shielded cat5 cable? FTP/UTP cable is what you seek then.

I'll try to snap some pics of the installed radio this weekend.

I'm assuming the software link you guys are using is this one?

Despite the antenna being on the tool box, and the mic cable being UTP, I am TX/RX over 55 miles with perfect clarity.
