Here is the monitoring protocol as it stands:
0100 to 0105 Z -- monitor ARFCOM 40m SSB calling freq (7.245 & 7.261 are in consideration*) We've pretty much settled on 7.261...
0105 to 0110 Z -- monitor 14.283, ARFCOM 20m SSB calling freq
0110 to 0115 Z -- monitor 3.900, ARFCOM 80m SSB calling freq

Just a note of clarification, the monitoring protocol is in effect every day but Thursday -- it's basically a sked where you listen on that schedule as often as possible. Gives us a chance to make contact with our fellow Arf'ers in the event of trouble.

Thursdays are net nights as KG5S noted -- just meet on 7.261 and if condx are too bad to hold the net, then we might try our other bands/freqs.

Very cool head-count tonight. Exciting to see the two groups merging and supporting each other. It's all about having lots of guys on the other end of the line when the chips are down.

It's funny watching the skeptics on the other threads -- they almost seem to want us to claim Ham can magically summon anyone anywhere. It should be understood that for any communication to take place, there must be someone listening. Doesn't matter if it's Ham, TV Broadcast, or smoke signals.

I'll take Ham any day and twice on Sunday -- you guys are great and it's comforting knowing I have a corps of folks out there whom I can call if needed.

Zulu? How about just a simple US time zone designation? Eastern Daylight, Central, Mountain or Pacific.

Hi:

0100 Zulu is:

9 PM Eastern
8 PM Central
7 PM Mountain
6 PM Pacific

Also, remember that "Zulu" time is also known as "UTC" (Universal Time Coordinate, IIRC) and "GMT" (Greenwich Mean Time).

Guys
A question I have a Very large Group that seems to be having a Net(same time we do) every week on 7.263 It seems to cover most of the South and east side of the US, 5s,4s,3, and some 8s I am wondering if any of you are hearing them.or getting interference ??
Last night between the storms I had overhead and their control operator I could not hear hardly any of you.

If I run my amp it bothers them. So I have been leaving it off. Do any of you have the same problem or know where the originate from.??
I was wondering what is below us on the 7.58 or 57 to see if we could slide down to 7.60 or 59 to try and get rid of the possible interference??

That's the OMISS net, 7.2635.

7.258 is Midcars...don't know about the evening time there, but there's usually someone in there with a net also.

Some of the OMIS folks run quite a bit of power, since the goal with them is WAS. When they get on me, I use my clarifier and shift my IF down a bit. It (and a little DSP) helps.

You know that I am ready for 160 as soon as I get my stuff back up and running! My 204ft G5RV is now flat (not inverted V) at 35Ft, it should work even better!

I also had a net on 7.259 which was interfering with hearing most arfcom hams.

I think you can change address on QRZ.com but not sure !

Would anyone be interested in trying a PSK31 net? I have never tried with more than two people, I'm not even sure what the protocol would be for taking turns, but I would be interested in figuring out how to do this.

I've got the whine of a broadcast hetrodyne on 41 right now. The other two are or will be hit by nearby nets. I'll join in wherever I can!

The normal net is Thursday night at 8pm Eastern (0000z) on 7261 or a little lower (maybe 7260, QRM dependent).

However we still maintain a monitoring agreement -- everyone who is able to get to their radio at 9pm Eastern (0100z) will turn on the rig and listen for any ARFCOM calls for 5 minutes (0100-0105z) -- every day. So by all means, flip it on and try for a contact tonight!

GlockTiger and I had about 50% copy on 40M. I'm on 80M now, no ARFCOM but the band seems goods with lots of full-power stations. I'll go back to 40 to look for Gunny but someone post a freq & I'll try it.

I've had to cut it short tonite. Let the record show that I did make contact with another board member (Kwaichaicaine), and we QSO'd for several minutes.

No problem guys, glad to talk to you both. The 40M band wasn't great, (50% copy on both of you), but it's getting better than it has been over the past month. Everybody up North anyways, get your antennas ready before Winter. My new Inv-V works GREAT on 80M and pretty good on 40 and 160, I think I'm set for this Winter on the low bands.

ETA: I did talk to both of you on my Vertical tonight because you came in stronger with it, but you both are far away for a 40M contact, relatively speaking. If you were only a state or two away I'm sure this would have been easy on my other antenna.

I lost two HF Icom 720As I liked them because they will transmit anyplace 2-30 Mhz. ( If need be)

. Most of the new ones will not, Also lost a Kenwood TM 741, Heath-kit Amp, Henry VHF repeater AMP
Two VHF Mobil AMPS, two HF Pre amps, VHF Repeater at my house, Satellite receiver, all the TVs in the house My computer at home, (am At work right Now) Garage door opener and the yard light in the front yard. Lots of Toast, But we are working on it.

Wow, what a shame. I asked what you had cause I knew you had older equip (w/ tube finals, etc.). I'm in the market for something along those lines. I've been following the Knwd TS-530/TS-830 and I like the reputation of the TS-440 too. Don't know much about the Icom stuff but I'm sure it's comparible.

I want a backup dependable HF rig for about $200-300.

So will you be shopping for similar era HF w/ your insurance $ or you gonna go more modern?

That will depend on them. On how they make me replace it. But I will have some of the older stuff.

Some how, Most of the new stuff will not make a general coverage transmitter, and while I don't use it that way, During a SHTF having one with a tuner will give me the ability to talk to any one, on any frequency.

SM ...all the new stuff is easy to make it TX and RX on any freq ! Just do a search on radio mods on what ever radio you are intrested in, I am sure you will find a mod for it.

If I were looking for a back up rig and wanted something kinda new, I would go to some hamfests and look for something like a TS-50 or IC-706, you can make them gen TX and RX very easy and you can find them for $250 to $400 bucks in good condition !

If you are looking for an older rig, the TS-520's and 530's are great but hard to fix if they crap out !!! (parts are hard to get )

??? now i'm worried again, a year ago i bought a 520 on an auction site, I listen to it just about every night. it's kind of my incentive to upgrade my lic.
I think i've heard all the lower 48 on it at one time or another. I use a 65 foot long wire about 10 ft off the ground. N+S oreintation. I'm just now building my first 20 m dipole and going to check if i can recieve better.

I'm sad too, i had a Thurs night off and could of listened in.

Well, Bloodhound, I think ur fine. Don't worry about problems you don't have. Plus, if you do have any issues, there's an awesome support network via a Yahoo Group.

Those guys love their 520/820/530/830's and have the know how to fix them (and they're willing to share their secrets).

May I ask what you paid for your 520? IM if you'd rather.

no, here is fine. lets all get a handle on what this stuff is going for.
I paid $200 shipped, with a base style mic. from a SK estate. (or so they said). so far, so good. got the original manual for it also. it is a TS-520, not the 520s, doesn't have 160 meters. I like the way the VFO works, analog, i've played on digital units, and it's just not the same.
