Friend of mine wants to come along on a hunt in 2 years and wants to build a rifle.
But I told him lugging a semi might not be the best option based on weight.
But I’m not opposed to it.

Does anyone lug a 6.5 or 308 around?

I haven't shot an elk with it but I have a DPMS G2 Hunter in 308 that I have shot several deer with.  It comes with a 20" barrel and weighs 7 1/2 pounds without glass.  I had my barrel cut to 18".

Depending on what it is.and where you hunting it might be ok. I have a lite hunter LR in 308 20". I could put lighter rings and scope on it and it might be ok. Think i still might prefer my savage 110 '06.

Not sure where it would be in Colorado but that’s my goal

I know I’ll be going
Not sure if he will be going though
I’m thinking of a bolt 300WM with my Omega 36M

AR10 for elk? No way.  Have your buddy fill a pipe with sand the walk a few stadiums, then add 75-100lbs on his back and walk the steps again. I'll likely use my 6.5G for shoulder season (cows) in December/ January but access is much easier and walking 6-10 miles with us in my back for 3-4 trips is very unlikely.

308 and 6.5C are very capable for elk but bullet choice will be important.

I have.  Get the right sling and it’s not bad.

Here’s where you are at with a DPMS G1 .308, heavy 4x IOR with steel rings and 5 rounds of 165 Gr.    Not really that bad, lighter glass and rings knock off a pound.  That rail got swapped and it lost 4 oz.

I used my AR-15 in 6.5 grendel to kill a big cow this year. I knew I was gonna have to do some hiking and didn’t want to be weighed down. Shot her with a 120gr gmx through the shoulder, complete pass through. The elk trotted 15 yards and fell over dead.

The works starts after you shoot an elk, at least if you are self guided.

I’ve done it but switched to a lighter 6.5 Grendel.

I’ve done it with a Aero/faxon gunner profile  16” 308 homebuild but haven’t been able to fill a tag with it. It wasn’t too bad. If I was going to hunt a lot with it, I’d probably replace the trijicon 1-8 on it with something lighter.

I run around the mountains here with a 12 lb. 6.5 CM AR. Train for it and it's no problem. If you're hunting elk in the mountains, you flatlanders should train extra hard anyway.

What bullet/rounds are you guys using? I built my AR10 for deer but might use it for elk as well.

I have a dpms g2 Hunter, had the barrel threaded and swapped the handguard, it’s lighter than my 7mag bolt gun. So far it has quickly killed everything it has shot.

As long as he don't mind the weight, he would be fine.   Before I had the firearm addiction and knew anything about guns really, my wife and I both used to kill elk with 303 British and Winchester power points.   All died as dead as dead gets.   So 6.5 or 308 either one have more juice than that, so really it's all about them feeling good with the gun.   I prefer my Tikka in 30-06, by a mile, but if he likes an AR, then sure.
