I get tired of the weeds taking over the onions, and by the time harvest time comes around I don't know where the onions are for the damn weeds. So this year I got some weed block, and cut X's out where I planted the onion sets. Didn't know if they'd be smart enough to come up through the holes, but looks like it may work out ok....

Anyone else do this?? I should have done it in my asparagus patch when I started it a few years ago. May start doing this to my garlic too if it works well.....

The last couple of years I have gotten my onions from Dixons.

Per their instructions I rake in some corn gluten meal every few weeks. It seems to work well.

We also use newspaper held down with pieces of lath. I fear that black cloth would hold to much heat through the summer.

Good point. Around here it's more rain than heat I worry about.

Well I'm going to try it with everything in the garden this year. That black cloth is pretty breathable and water permeable, so I guess we will see if it works

Subscribed for results.

I do my whole garden in cardboard then top with mulch.

Gardens big enough this year it's a real pain to find enough cardboard and get all the mulch home.

Well, just about all of the onions are poking up though their holes in the fabric. After Rain for the past 4 days, something should be growing

I always weed around them with a tool like this:

In case you didn't know, corn gluten prevents germination.

Just an FYI.

If I could get organic CGM cheap, I would use it heavily.
