Recommend me a portable ac I can run off a generator. Need to cool about 600 sq. ft. Thanks.

I have not found a portable AC that I thought was worth a damn. Had 4 of them so far.
Can you use a window unit instead?

I have only French doors in the room I would like cool during power outage with the generator. The bedroom windows are pretty large that are double paned and slide up/down.

Why not install a mini split and have a switch to change to gen set when needed?  This is the idea I am kicking around.

Using the ol' 30 BTU per square foot rule, you're gonna need around 18,000 BTU.

Nobody makes a window unit (or mini split system) that large that'll run on 120 volts - which means your generator also needs to have 240 volt output.

ETA: In a pinch, something smaller than 18KBTU would still probably help.

Even a small window unit can still pull a lot of humidity out of an enclosed area - which makes table or box fans more effective.

I used my 3K generator to run a Emerson 10,000BTU portable AC after Irma.  We have our 12' x 12' guest bedroom set up for such occasion by blocking off AC duct and return, well sealed windows and door and a solid night table right in front of the window.  We put the portable AC on top of the night stand and run the heat exhaust hose from the back of the AC through the window which is only about 12" long.  Four of us can stay in that room during Florida summer and keep it at 76 degrees without problem.  At my hunting camp I have a camper with about 7' x 14' living space that I keep cooled in summer with a generator and 7,000BTU portable AC.  It will keep the sleeping areas cooled down to about 74 degrees at night without problem.  My parents have a 12,000BTU portable AC and it has trouble keeping their 14' x 22' master bedroom cooled below 79 degrees during summer.  IMHO in a well insulated and sealed room you'll need at minimum 50 BTU per sq.ft. to keep the room at comfortable temperature in summer.

I bought a LG floor unit from Home Depot.
It works best for securing the window IMHO.
During a power outage in the summer, We stay in our Bedroom when home and only cool it. There is no cheap easy way to cool the whole house.
Not pictured is now the unit sits on a 12 inch pedestal so as i can run a gravity fed condensation water drain off the unit to outside.

How the venting looks outside.

Are you looking for a portable AC because you can't fit a window unit? Do you need it to be portable?
If not, look at installing a small spit unit. They make them in all sizes. I've seen people install a split unit on a travel trailer. You can even get a hybrid AC/DC solar type air conditioner/heat pump, like this one: Link

For a portable unit, forget about units with a single hose exhaust. They are very inefficient. Pay a bit more and get a dual hose system (as also mentioned in one of the replies). You will thank me later.

Also, Micro Air sells "soft start" boards that can be installed inside an AC unit to minimize starting current. This will allow to run a larger AC unit with a smaller generator. They are very popular in the RV crowd.

At my last house, I had a 10k BTU HiSense portable from Lowes.  I think it was $249.  It would keep my master bedroom (roughly 300sf) at 70*F without issue.  Pulled a max of 900w once the compressor was up to full pressure according to my kill-a-watt.  I know they make 12k and I think 15k units.  Might need 2 10k's or 12k's depending on pricing, but it's doable off a 3k gen set.

I run an LG window unit in my kid's room and an LG portable in the master every night during the summer (Texas, hot as shit). the LG is fine once you vent it out the window. You can't run something in a closed system, that defeats the laws of thermodynamics. gotta pump the hot air out somewhere.

I have a slightly older version.

I use it in my Garage, where it reliably blows cold air on me. But it has been used by friends who have had AC issues, and they say that it works quite well as long as you are cooling a reasonable size of the house.

It is in my long-term power outage plan - my Genset can run it and my Fridge without issue - but I rarely have power failures and thus it has never been more than tested.

You do have to watch the condensation port. I just leave it open in my Garage; my plan in an emergency is to run it in my master bathroom bathtub and cool that room.

I bought a portable with a window exhaust hose.  It works, but it does heat up the rest of the house faster since it's pulling some of your cool air out of the room to vent exhaust heat outside.

What I'm wondering, is if I were to also get a window unit for another room (that has a window that's more suitable to it), would that solve the problem?  If I had the window unit set to suck in air from outside, and then use the portable in the bedroom, I would think that it would at least somewhat remediate the issue of the rest of the house heating up because there would be some cold air positive pressure from the window unit to offset the air getting sucked out by the portable...thoughts?

I'm also considering just buying a second hose and duct taping it to the input of the portable unit, so that it would be sucking air from outside rather than sucking in my already cooled air...

Another vote for a 2-hose unit.  Only way to go.
