Today I heard that local law enforcement officers can show their ID and badge to get on base and use the facilities, like the gym. Does anyone here know this for fact? If so, is there a law you can point me to?

Thanks.

Usually some sort of agreement is in place. I've seen LAPD at Pendleton quite a few times.

Most base orders, regarding personally owned weapons, that I've read have specifically exempted law enforcement to carry too.

All you need is a drivers license to get on post after you are on post I couldn't see why they wouldn't let you use their facility. But when I was at Ft Belvoir you needed to scan your DoD ID to get into the facilities obviously you can still get by them because they aren't always paying attention to who is coming and going but they have a sign that says 100% I'd check. Here at Lejeune they say they do random Id checks so I'm not sure how it all works.

Does anyone know if this is true at the CMP north store at Camp Perry?

Local LEO's and Fish and wildlife are on NAS Jax quite a bit. Jax Beach PD does most of their SWAT tryout on Camp Blanding, and occasionally trains with members of the 20th SFG.

Never seen it on RA type bases.

Lots of LEOs are either reserve component guys or retired military and use post facilities that way.

Local departments will often coordinate to use on post ranges.

There are obviously agreements in place at many bases for law enforcement issues, but that's a separate topic.

We had a lot of civie cops on base after 9/11, and due to the hours and times worked, weekend and holiday duty,  they were permitted to buy stuff at the Class 6 store, like smokes, Gatorade, munchies, etc.  I never saw one buying booze, but no one was gonna turn away a cop working one of our Entry Control Points when he wanted something to eat or needed some water.  As we had a lot of civilian cops who were called to active duty, either IMA's or traditional Reservists, we did a lot of joint training, and of course, through a mutual aid agreement, would back them up if needed near the base, (a Sheriffs Deputy was killed responding to a domestic at an apartment not 100 yards from the gate a few years ago, because backup was 20 mikes out.  Security Forces troops can roll up as a show of force and provide for the officers safety now) just like our fire dogs and med folks do.

As most bases allow guests, having a civie cop (or any occupation) in the gym, working out with the service member is very possible.

I am allowed to enter Davis-Monthan AFB with my FLEO badge and creds and I get to use SOME of their facilities, like the auto craft shop, the gym, and many of the recreational facilities; no PX access though. THis is in part because we keep our Air & Marine assets on deck at DM, same way at NAS Jacksonville, where we keep our P-3 Orions.

We usually ask them if theyre on official business and if they need any assistance.  If they're coming on to hook someone we will send a patrol along.  Many of the local cops are in the Guard or Reserves so they just throw up a CAC and we just let them on.  When I was at Nellis we had a North Las Vegas cop who was a dependent and lived in base housing, she rolled through the gates all the time in her take home car.  I've never seen a case where the local cops just want to come on base for shits and giggles, you'd think they'd have better things to do.

We cut through base all the time while working dope, to get to the other side of town quickly. Hang badge out the window and drive on through.

This base also hosts a ton of LE training, and soon will have a federal LE training center. They are used to cops coming and going all the time.

Federal LE are allowed on pretty much any normal military installation.  State and local depends on the type of jurisdiction the base has and any local agreements.

State and local don't have any jurisdiction unless there is a standing MOA or MAA between the base and their agency.

Most bases have a tiered MWR system that allow all people to buy snacks, drinks and prepared food at their convenience stores (many contractors and GS employees don't have MWR access) ; but their main exchanges or the DECA commissaries

And that is based on?  The desires of the installation commander; the land is federal property and under title X authority. The installation commander (I believe under title 34 but I may be off) through MAAs or MOA grants that jurisdiction to locals

Depends.  Some bases are owned by the state and leased by the federal government.  A lot of off base assets, i.e. radar towers, auxiliary airfields, etc. are like that, a few actual installations are as well.

On base means on a base, rented property is not "on base."  I am referring to federal title X bases, there are numerous title 32 bases (guard bases) that aren't federal property

I have been told by JAG at certain active duty bases I was assigned to that the base was being leased by the Federal government but was still owned by the state government.  Maybe I've been lied to my entire career, but I've never had reason to question it up to now.

There are numerous bases like that mostly NG and ANG bases that may have active forces assigned to them.  Buckley AFB base in Aurora, CO was one of them till a few years ago, it was a ANG base that had numerous federal units assigned there to include AC USAF-SF as part of their guard force.   But for various reason it was turned into a Fed base

Not taking sides, but MWR facilities are for the most part free to use.  Civilian facilities aren't.

Andersen AFB is the worst offender.

Sure, I can bring a van or bus loaded with people/equipment onto the flightline by getting only my ID checked. We've swapped CAC cards just to see if they really check... and we've got through the gate no problems.

Try to enter their commissary however... Holy. Shit. I can be in uniform and they will check my ID as I enter. Then as I'm at the register, they will check my ID again.

The BX is no different either, I tried vouching for someone that left their ID in the dorms and they wouldn't let that person enter the BX.

I see LEO's on base here pretty often.

There are a lot of AD bases as well (at least in the AF) that are state owned and leased. It still does not give the state employees automatic access. You are correct in that it will depend on the MOA established.

As to the MWR facilities are "free," well they aren't. What do you think that "tax" at the bx is for and the money they "give back" and the reason gas is the same price as gas off base. IE its a redistribution of your money.  I usually have freeloaders removed if I see them. I can't see paying for something and have it used by someone who is not allowed.

I used to do the same thing on Buckley for K9 training. Every week we would have a handful of DHS and ATF handlers on for training. All I had to do was go to the gate and follow them to the site. APD and ACSO had concurrent in base housing only and had to be escorted by and SF member for any official business. Some members of the local depts are reserve/ guard but could not come on in a patrol car unless on official bussiness. This also applies to outside fire depts. We had to escort them even during emergency calls, unless no units were available, then the contract guardforce would have to.

I see state and local leo's on base pretty much daily (Charleston).
I had always been under the impression they were only allowed on for official duties, but I see the squad cars at the gym and commissary pretty frequently. I get the dependant/reserve/guard thing, not really sure   I agree with them rolling around base in their take home car off duty (especially grocery shopping )
