One man dead, RCMP officer injured after shooting A strong police presence at an apartment building in Fort McMurray where an officer was shot, and a male suspect was killed overnight. Updated: Wed Mar. 16 2011 17:17:54 ctvedmonton.ca One person is dead after a shooting involving an RCMP officer in Fort McMurray overnight. The officer suffered a gunshot wound and is now in hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Police say they got an emergency call around 3:30 a.m. on a report of a male with a gun at an apartment building in Fort McMurray. RCMP say officers entered the apartment building where they found the male suspect with a gun. One officer was shot, and the male suspect was killed. Officials have not released the suspect's name. A teenage boy who lives in the building says he heard police pull up to the scene early in the morning. "I was in my apartment sleeping and all I heard was a bunch of sirens pull up, a bunch of cops were outside with their guns and there was a lot of screaming. A little while later there was a big smash and I'm guessing that was the front window," he said. The incident is now subject to an investigation led by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to determine if the actions of the officer who shot and killed the suspect were justified. "The circumstances as I understand them at this point are that the police officer that was shot was not the individual that shot and killed the male," said ASIRT director Clifton Purvis. The officer who shot the suspect was not injured. "We've seized the firearms of all the police members who responded and we'll take steps to determine who fired their weapons and how many times." The injured officer is in stable condition. |

Interesting statement:
"We've seized the firearms of all the police members who responded and we'll take steps to determine who fired their weapons and how many times." In my Texas law enforcement career, when we shot bad guys, the Texas Ranger assigned to investigate just gave us a pat on the back, but never 'seized' our firearms

It's pretty much sop here and with the RCMP getting pounded in the "court of public opinion" the last couple of years..the brass are getting paranoid I think.

About everything. 3) Anytime a camera is in your face: "Constables are bad people, your baby din' do nuffin!" Repeat as necessary. |

Ahhhhh, now I remember why I retired...............LEO work used to be fun in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. Scrutiny was coming down the pike in the mid 90s and I was beginning to feel like we were going to lose the war on crime. By 2000, I did not want to be the one going to jail for pissing someone, or their family, off by doing my job the way it was taught to me in 1975, so I finished with 25 years of service. Now I am a campus cop, but I am the Chief, and RHIP, so it is not too bad

They took mine at the scene. I drove to the property room and they issued me a new one. Had to qualify with it before I could go back on the streets. Got mine back several weeks later with evidence numbers all over it.  |
