We're all ok. Nobody was injured. We were in the Prius and the guy in the truck behind us at the stoplight thought the light had turned green, accelerating into us.

Today I heard back from the other guy's insurance. They said something which made my heart sink,

"We need to do some investigating. This gentleman doesn't have any trucks listed on his auto insurance policy."

I hadn't seen the pics yet but we were almost broadsided tonight when an idiot blew a red light. MrGH seen him and slammed on the brakes before we got halfway into the intersection to start our left turn or he would have nailed us.
Good news is though, there was a County Sherrif that wasn't to far behind him and he also blew thru the red light to get him. Justice was swift tonight.

MrsG glad to hear everyone was ok, I hope things turn out ok with the insurance too.

Thanks. That's what I told my daughter too. She was really upset about the car. I told her it was just stuff. Stuff can get fixed.

Gloftoes, I'm glad nobody was hurt. MrsG, you're right...'stuff' can be fixed, people, not as easily. I'm thankful that none of your kids were hurt. I wonder what the deal is with the other guy's insurance...

The adjuster finally got in touch with me to get a statement as to what happened ("the asshole ran into my rearrend. What else is there to know?"), and said they're still trying to "verify his coverage".

If the veh that hit you is new enough that he prob had it financed, there are good odds that the agent should have been called to add coverage when it was sold, making it an Errors and Omissions claim that keeps them on the hook.

FWIW Progressive has those veh running about because they know that if you get a check in their hands in 24hrs, the odds of lawyers being involved drops by 2/3, even if there is still a bit more to work out. Feel free to play hardball by now

As I understood insurance, if the other guy doesn't have any or lapsed or whatever...yours pays you. Then they go after the bastard or his insurance co. to get their money back. At least thats what I thought.

Glad everyone is ok though. Thats what really counts.

He was driving an '82 Chevy. I looked up the registration and it looks like he bought it in May.

That's true--if you have "full coverage" (collision coverage). It still sucks because any time your insurance company pays out it is held against you in some way, such as loss of discounts, or--especially if there are further "involvements" in the next year--it can result in cancellation or much higher rates. The term "involvements" means ANYTHING that happens, your fault or not--tickets, accidents, comprehensive claims (cracked/broken windshield, vandalism, etc.).

Mandatory insurance is a MAHVELOUS thing...It's really a shame that it isn't mandatory in every state. I realize the implications of that statement...but bottom line, what if Mr or Mrs Glogtoe were hurt? Couldn't work? Couldn't care for the girls? Then what???? Ugh...all I know is, it's yucky, but I'm glad you guys were not hurt. I know it's trite, but cars are just metal. The cargo they hold is WAY more important.

Crap...and the guy didn't have any??? WTH!!!

In MA, if your insurance gets dropped, so does your registration. Same now in RI (for a long time, RI drivers were allowed the OPTION of insurance. They'd cross the MA border and wreak all kinds of havoc with our premiums.)

Question...if the guy is uninsured, is it prosecutable? I mean, he's driving without insurance when it is mandatory...should be, no?

The Prius lokks a bit crunchy, though...

At least the driver responsible has insurance of some type. In any case, you know where to go get 'em!

BTW.... don't just get your car repaired. Evan after repairs, the vehicle has lost value and you are entitled to be compensated for that loss. You will have to go after that extra $$ though. It is not usually offered

Yay, at last some good news!

I talked to my insurance agent and he said that since we've been with Nationwide for over 10 years, even if we were to have an at-fault accident it wouldn't send our rates up. We just need to take the car to the Toyota dealership and Nationwide will take care of the rest, including subrogating our deductible.
