if you want to plug them both in with data cables, just go get a 15 dollar router.  if you want to sit on the toilet and look at porn, prolly should get a wireless router so you dont need to run cables through the bathroom

Just get  a wireless access point or wireless router and hook it up to the cable modem. You can then run the laptops wirelessly.

This.

The laptops may have built-in Wi-Fi; otherwise you'll need to buy USB Wi-Fi adapters as well.

Prepare for a lot of "AAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH" when you decide to go wireless.  When it works, it's great.  But it can be a PITA.

So I have 1 cable line coming in to the cable modem, what do i need to hook up the second lap top. can i run a data cable from one lap top to the other, ala vcr to tv or do i need to just get a remote router? thanks again!

No.

Incoming line > cable modem > wireless router

You could get a cheap network router and run network cables from it to each or go with what everyone else is suggesting and get a wireless router and be done with it.  No wires and freedom of movement.  The wireless option will probably be cheaper too, no cables required.  It's quite easy to set up actually.

$20 wired router, or $40 wireless router (which ironically enough, needs wires.).....

Read the fine print on your terms of service to see if they allow a router.  Basically, if you can plug any computer into the cable modem, connecting a router should be no problem.  But if they require a login, you may have issues.

if you go with a router, be wary of other person stealing all the bandwidth (if the other downloads much movies/porn).  if you're the chronic porn/movie downloader, your partner will be pissed that the internet is broken.

old school - null modem cable, or null modem adapter for serial cable.   It'll work, but it's slow (56k FTW!!).

Get a router, either wired or wireless.  Get one with a built-in firewall.

When you join a network, think of it like checking in to a hotel.  in your case you have a cable modem with one place to plug in a computer.  that is basically a small hotel or a bed and breakfast.  you plug one computer in, and the cable modem automatically assigns it a 'room' Once your computer is assigned a 'room' it knows where to send information from the internet.  think of the information like mail or messages routed to your computer from the rest of the world.  The problem, as you have discovered, is the cable modem only has one port, or place to plug in your computer.  what you need is more ports.  if you get a simple router, and plug it into the modem, the cable modem puts the router into its own 'room.'  The router will have at least 4 places to plug in other computers (a larger hotel, hanging off a small hotel, which doesnt make much sense in terms of the analogy.).  you will plug your two computers into the router and the router will route info between the internet and your computers.

Get a wireless router.  What is the point of a laptop if you have to be tethered to the network?

They're $40 and setup is very simple.  You won't be sorry.

You will need a router (wireless or otherwise) to go between the two computers and the cable modem. Wireless is the way to go for most people. (I have a mixture of both wired and wireless, but I'm running two independent networks through the same cable modem and have two IP addresses from my internet provider)

Basically you plug the router into the cable mode and then configure your computers to work on the network you created. When you set up the router, it typically will have some questions about the internet connection (wide area network), and some questions about the local area network. The Local area network (LAN) is your laptops.

I forgot to add to me post, Google how to "bridge" your Router/Cable Modem. It makes wireless connection faster.....

Even if you don't do wireless right now, get the wireless router. It has plugs, too. Easier to go untethered later if you already have a wireless router and decide to surf porn in the attic so people can't see.

Depends on the provider. ComCast helped me get set up over the phone. Even asked me if I had a router.....

I don't think anyone's said it yet, but....

Get a Router!!!

Get a wireless one too.....Even if you don't have a wireless card right now.  All WIRELESS routers are ALSO wired routers...

You can add a wireless card to your laptop later...

Get one of these http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11060711

or one of these http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12538152

I'd favor the Linksys over the Belkin.

You can set this up pretty easily using the disc that comes with the router and then you'll be able to use the laptops via wireless.
