thats better than the strap of your bag slipping off your shoulder to your elbow, and the laptops corner barely hitting the ground. Opening it up to see a crack from corner to corner across the screen
 Still use it just has a big black line running across it

I had to order a bezel for a Dell notebook the other day, and I could get that part branded Dell, HP, Compaq, E-Machines or with no brand at all. And they all came from the same factory in China. The main killer in modern notebooks is heat. They're built to be slim and quiet, push one hard and it will overheat fast. When that happens the substandard boards, chips and solder joints go bad fast. And it only takes one overheat and that computer will be flakey for the rest of it's life. I've got a fucking pile of them in my work room, some only a week out of warranty. One of them, a $1200 HP had it's nVidia graphics chip fail. There was a known bad batch of chips. nVidia, being a reputable company, paid HP a large sum of money to fix every notebook with a failed nVidia graphics chip. HP took nVidia's money and decided not to fix any that were out of the 1 year warranty. |

I re-manufacture those so I doubt that you did anything worse that what I have seen come through the doors before.
Some of their models are pretty nice, others...not so much. |

Someone tripped on my wifes notebook cord and brought it to the ground. All is fine except the port where the blug goes into the PC is a bit messed up but it is still connected internally and making a connection...for now

I've dropped/dumped my HP laptop about once a year, for the 4 years I've owned it now. It's not as pretty as it once was, buy everything still works great. YMMV, but if it's working now, you are probably safe.
....until the next time you drop it at least.

My wife's Mac laptop has a magnetic power connection for this type of situation, pulls right off if tugged "Oooh look at me, I have a laptop with a mag safe power adapter" 
I hate macs, but I actually think the magnetic ac adapter is a pretty nifty idea'r You can usually get away with the hard drive not being damaged in a fall if its not reading/writing data at the time, or if its turned of or standby/hibernate. SSD is coming, we'll all be safe then

I like my Toughbook, I can toss it down the driveway.
Seriously though, i've dropped a few, it is possible that it may have shortened the life of the harddrive.... if it is a standard drive and not solid state. both are easy to replace if needed. The other thing that is not so easy to replace, (since you got tangled in it) Make sure you didn't damage the a/c adapter plug on the laptop, I've fixed a few of those, they are NOT fun to fix.

Apple's MagSafe power connector is fucking awesome. Been through quite a few power supplies and several DC input board repairs on quite a few laptops in the past.
Not a pleasant thing to deal with, but it beats the hell out of other problems - my iBook G4 dropped in a bad kind of way. The noise it made, I thought the screen or the hinges had broken, but it was fine - except for the kernel panic. The impact was enough to make the hard drive crash, I managed to keep it running for about a week by formatting it to half capacity until I could get my hands on a new hard drive. Disassembling a laptop is quite an adventure - but an iBook will drive you insane. My MacBook Pro has had a few disconcerting drops, but the Sudden Motion Sensor parks the hard drive to prevent that sort of accident. Which is a good thing, from what I've seen in the repair manual, the MBP is probably worse to take apart than the iBook. |

I strongly urge you to back up anything important before you shut it down... I did this a couple weeks ago and everything appeared fine immediately afterwards - however on the next boot it blue screened and never came back.
