Sometimes they just lose their will to zip. They just give up.

This happens when you use small gauge plastic zippers instead of giant metal ones.
The metal zippers on my jeans outlast the fabric itself. Flimsy plastic zippers wear out real quick. |

The little balls on the two sides of the plastic zippers slowly erode over time resulting in a non zipping zipper. So, basically, you don't have any balls.

Check Yellow pages for a seamstress, they could probably sew in new zippers.

Use bee's wax, or zipper wax to lube them.
ETA: Oops...I didn't realize you were talking about shitty plastic zippers. |
