Democrat Bill Owens is leading in the 23rd Congressional District race.

The Plattsburgh attorney has 57,050 votes compared to Conservative Doug Hoffman, a Lake Placid CPA, with 54,538 votes.

Dede Scozzafava, a Republican who dropped out of the race Saturday, has 6,982 votes.

There are more than 10,000 absentee votes to still be counted.

Owens now leads in Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton and Essex counties.

Hoffman leads in Lewis, Oswego, Oneida, Fulton, Hamilton and Madison counties.

Owens is maintaining a 48 percent to 46 percent lead.

Four precincts in St. Lawrence County are having mechanical problems and total results for the county won't be available tonight.

What possesses someone to vote for a candidate that has dropped out?

The sad part is that every one of those people's votes are equal to mine.....

If he's still on the ballot, some people just flip the levers straight across a party. They may not have had time to update the machines.

Oh, way to interject the logic into the discussion.

I'd completely forgotten about straight ticket votes.

Damn!  Damn.  Damn. Damn.

Nah, it isn't 7,000 people. It's closer to 2,000 people being stupid 2 or 3 times. Haven't you heard of ACORN?

Those 7,000 people wouldn't want to waste their vote by voting for a third party candidate, now, would they?

I can throw anything that glitters out and a bluefish will hit it.

They saw the (R) and pulled the lever.

Bingo.  People turned in their absentee ballots before Scuzzyvulva dropped out of the race.

Don't forget the early voting.  Or does NY23 not have that?  Man, that would suck.  Waste your vote on a candidate who drops out after you cast it.

Third party  voting is fine in smaller elections. Big time waste in national general election. you need to build the parties up from the bottom. not the top down.

Yep. It is going to come down to those early votes.

Either way the message was sent.

If I remember correctly, the one that dropped out was a liberal republican.  She threw her support behind the democrat, rather than the conservative republican.  I suspect most of the people who voted for her did it because they wanted to send a message that they supported her.

This.

and the fact that if (somehow) people liked her the most, it could be a vote of support

A lot of those may be early ballots, from before she dropped out.

I am from Missouri, a few years back we elected a dead guy ("Crash" Carnahan). The stupidity of the american electorate no longer surprises me.

IIRC, this election fills the seat for a year, and it's up again next year.
