A friend asked me for some advice he is buying a pistol ,  He is getting a sig p230 and has a choice of 9x18 or .380 at first he just said it was a 9mm i assumed parabellum but i researched it and it only came in 9x18 which i don't think is the same as 9mm parabellum? so which is the better caliber to recommend?

The P230 was available in a special 9x18mm chambering. NOT the 9x18 Makarov, but another .355" round (like .380/9x17 and 9x19).

ETA: The standard chamberings for the P230 and its successor the P232 are .32ACP (7.65mm Browning) and .380ACP (9x17mm).

ETA2: Does anybody even make dies for the 9x18 Police?

Tell your friend to look for something else. .380 is a piece of shit, and 9x18 sounds like a hard caliber to shop for.

9x18 Police, or 9x18 Ultra, perhaps?

This....

And why?

When 9mm is abundant.

The real question, actually, is why in something that size. The P230 and P232 aren't exactly small guns.

.380 is perfect for a "disappearing" pocket gun like a LCP or Kel-Tec. But with a P230, you might as well go with a Kahr or PPS.
