Assuming smaller calibers, it seems like across the board they all take 30 round magazines.

Is there some logistical reason why 30 rounders are predominant? MP5, AR15, AK47, AK74, M3 Grease Gun. All different calibers, but the "default" mags are 30 rounders.

Same goes for the larger cal rifles. Why does the FAL, M14, G3, BAR, etc. all use 20. Why not 18 or 22?

There are those that break the mold so to speak. The Uzi has a 32 rounder. AUG has 42. Carl Gustav is a 36 rounder.

What's the deal?

AUG has 42 just for the light support HBAR version. IIRC it's the largest mag they could get and still have a guy go  prone.

It's ridiculously long otherwise though.

When you're loading them, just grab 2 or 3 stripper clips per mag.  It's easier that way.

Because someone, possibly after Vietnam, was having a beer with another vet and they recalled what happened to their other friend Reggie. Reggie had a 20 rd. magazine in his M-16 (actually loaded with 18) and came across a vietcong on the trail. The VC had a chinese made AK47, with a 30 rd. magazine. Both saw each other at the same time and in less time than it takes to tell it, they unloaded on each other. Being it was at night and both were scared shitless, the rounds were going all over the place, into the dirt, over their head, through their web gear and canteens. The thing that made the difference was that Reggie came to a locked back empty mag alot sooner. The VC was able to keep firing, almost twice as long, and finally, sadly, a round found Reggie.

We now have 30 round magazines, sir.

Most mag fed rifles are developed to compete for some type of military or service contract.  The number of rounds a rifle can accomodate is usually a function of the weight limits and ballistic requirements set forth by the contract issuer.  Beyond that the goal is just to cram in the most bang for the buck within the design specifications.

And yah... round numbers are easier to add.

Don't really know OP. It probably has to do with what the intended purpose of the weapon is. You don't see mini-guns with a magazine capacity of 10 rounds.

ETA: If you go by 10s, it is easier to do a total round count in the field under high stress.

if i have 6, 30 round mags, i know i have 180 rounds.

i was thinking all the ammo i've come across is packaged in 10, 15, 20, 30 or 50rd packages.  it'd suck to load a 28rd mag and have 2 cartridges flying around loose.  as for 32rd uzi mags, thats probably more of an exception than a norm.

It is a primorial and is the smallest Giuga number.

30 is the smallest sphenic number, and the smallest of the form
where r is a prime greater than 3. 30 has an aliquot sum of 42; the second sphenic number and all sphenic numbers of this form have an aliquot sum 12 greater than themselves. The aliquot sequence of 30 is 16 members long, it comprises (30,42,54,66,90,144,259,45,33,15,9,4,3,1,0)

Thirty has but one number for which it is the aliquot sum the square number 841.

Adding up some subsets of its divisors (e.g., 5, 10 and 15) gives 30, hence 30 is a semiperfect number.

30 is the largest number such that coprimes smaller than itself are also prime.[1]

A polygon with thirty sides is called a tricontagon. Both an icosahedron and a dodecahedron have 30 edges.

Since any group G such that |G| = pnm, where p does not divide m, has a subgroup of order pn, and 30 is the only number less than 60 that is not either a prime or of the above form, it is the only candidate for the order of a simple group less than 60 that one needs other methods to reject.

Isn't this a moot question anyway, since it seems to be taboo to actually load magazines to their full capacity?  That nice round 30 becomes a 29 or 28 or 27 so it's an exercise in math frustration anyway

I figure it like this:  3 boxes = 2 mags.  Basically I buy boxes per 2 mags.

As for hotdogs, I buy the bun length Ballparks with 8 dogs which matches the bag of 8 buns.

i don't understand why someone would only put 29 rounds in a 30 round mag. it makes no sense if i could squeeze 31 in there i would cause you never know when that extra will count, although i'm certain that will mean something is terribly wrong with that mag.

fun fact for the day
British infantry Sergeants during the Napoleanic wars were responsible for ensuring that the soldiers in ranks did not intentionally pour out powder from their cartridges during volley fire.
