It is third world but when I was there in the 80's it looked a lot better than that. It was a relatively clean place for the tropics if you don't count the trenches along the streets where the sewage flowed. It was always a challenge not to stumble into them in the dark when "drunk as a sailor in port". I do miss the fun I had in the PI |

You guys with the comments might want to consider some of us have families down there, and over 180 people were killed, with hundreds still missing, with another storm coming.
I'm going to be back in the PI next week. We got the tail end of the storm here in Cambodia, with some severe flooding further down the Mekong. That storm isn't through killing people, yet. |

Based on what I saw in Korea (which is 'advanced' compared to the PI), and based on how many folks from the PI would do *anything* (and if you've been to the ROK, you know I literally mean *anything* to get out - PI is to ROK what Mexico is to the US in terms of immigration).... I would agree with the above statement, river... |

Thanks for the pics, penguinslider. Hope all goes well, and be safe with your activities.

Not so much in the more rural areas but the better things extend farther out in Korea. I can only imagine what happened to the PI after the U.S. left. The U.S. in a lot of ways supported the economy of the country, not just the areas around the bases. |

No, the left wing, pro-Socialist and Islamist assholes asked us to leave. The majority of people in the north did NOT. That would be saying I'm responsible for Obama being President, even though I voted the other way. Most of the folks on Luzon, where Manila is located, are very good friends of the US, and are fighting the same fight in their country that we are in ours, except it's got down to the bullet box, rather than the ballot box, in some areas. Don't forsake our friends because they were outvoted by assholes., |

For those of you guys on Luzon: I'll be landing at CRK before noon on the 9th, if anyone wants to get together. My GF's family that were in Manila are now safe at her cousin's near Cabanatuan, thank God. Hopefully, they'll avoid further trouble with this next storm, and I have someplace to stay once I get there!

What would you guys do if you have this hottie stuck on the roof of her house cold and wet?
It took me a while to find a COC compliant picture of her. NY Times Link Filipino Actor Saves Real-Life Damsel in Distress MANILA, Philippines (AP) –– A popular Philippine actress cried out for help from a rooftop as a tropical storm roared and floodwaters rose menacingly. Then an actor emerged from nowhere on a speedboat and swept her to safety. A romantic scene from a movie? No, it was the real-life travails of young actress Christine Reyes. Her rescue by movie and TV heartthrob Richard Gutierrez as Tropical Storm Ketsana raged across the northern Philippines was one of the happier moments of last weekend's disaster that left at least 140 dead and tens of thousands homeless. As the storm blew and set off the worst flooding in the capital in more than four decades, Reyes climbed to the roof of her two-story house in upscale Provident village in hard-hit Marikina city on Saturday with her mother and two young children. Marooned for hours, she made a frantic call for help to ABS-CBN TV network with her mobile phone. ''If the rains do not stop, the water will reach the roof. We do not know what to do. My mother doesn't know how to swim,'' she said, weeping. Gutierrez, a close friend and Reyes' co-star in an upcoming movie, heard of her plight, borrowed an army speedboat and went to the rescue. ''We couldn't go fast because of the strong currents and floating cars,'' Gutierrez told GMA TV Network on Monday. Reaching Reyes' house, he struggled to tie the boat to a tree amid the churning waters, climbed into her house and eventually whisked her to safety. ''I thought it was our ending but I did not lose hope,'' Reyes said, thanking Gutierrez. ''Let us help those who have not yet been rescued.'' About 8,000 people have been rescued by troops and civilian volunteers from rooftops and isolated villages. At least 32 people remain missing. The houses of more than 450,000 people were inundated in the storm, which dumped more than a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours. Some 115,000 displaced people were brought to about 200 schools, churches and other evacuation shelters. |
