.....will fit just inside the tip of the barrel of a .17 caliber air rifle? When dry fired, particularly in the direction of your back porch window, the roly poly will be launched into the window with a glorious splat.

You know youve found a good girl when you can sit outside over beers and shoot roly polys at your back window for almost an hour before getting bored

Why, yes... yes, I did know that.  I thought it was pretty funny, when I was 11.

break-barrel air rifle. one pump generates 1000fps for a pellet. I found the air rifle in my attic, forgot I even had it. I dont think I have touched it since I moved on to real weapons nearly 6 years ago

It's a little gray bug, with armadillo-looking exoskeleton, that rolls up into a ball (like a 'dillo) when it's fucked with.

They're actually crustaceans, not insects, and technically according to Utah wildlife statutes it's illegal to kill them.

Of course, no one that I know of has ever been prosecuted, and I doubt the Utah DWR even knows the law is so broadly written.

I was not aware of that.

One of my old entomology professors showed us that.

Here's the reference:

http://wildlife.utah.gov/rules/R657-13.php

R657-13-2(y) "Protected aquatic wildlife" means, for purposes of this rule only, all species of fish, crustaceans, or amphibians.

Like I said, the DWR probably doesn't even care.

'Cause senseless destruction of living things out of boredom is cool.

If they're a destructive pest, fine, but from what I remember of them when I was little, pillbugs are completely harmless.

On a related note you can smash a spider with the blast of air from dry firing a pellet gun.  Pump gun, place within an inch of the spider, pull trigger, SPLATTER.  No fuss, no muss!

ETA: Why would anyone kill roly polies?  They are about as harmless as they come.

That's my point of view as well.  There is no reason to kill them, and leaving them alive allows them to dispose of rotting vegetation.  They spread no diseases and they do not contaminate food (google told me so ).  I always go out of my way not to step on them if possible.  There are much better things to shoot for fun that are actual pests.

You know what else is fun?

Burning ants, shooting dogs and birds with a pellet gun, pouring salt on snails, pulling the wings off of butterflies, etc...

The list of fun ways to kill harmless creatures goes on and on, you just need to be a douche to partake.

That 's some small bugs the rolly-poly's around here in SC could easily go .38 caliber...just "bump" them out the bore of an old .38spl. "swing-out"  with 4 grains of unique...they might even punch through a beer can. just thumb them into the case and they are ready to go!

I used to make little mazes out of lego for them when I was a kid. It seemed like they were just the right size to fit between the blocks.

Incidentally, there are percussion caps that fit inside the barrel of a .177 air rifle pretty close. Not that that would be a good idea or anything.

Roly polys, some people I know also called them pill bugs. I've never seen so many names for a single bug before. I think they are awesome, and you are a dick for shooting them. It's like a guy I once knew who grew up in FL who said they used to beat 'dillos with sticks when they were kids. For some reason that always stuck in my head. I didn't see a 'dillo till I was 22, but when I did I remembered that. I couldn't imagine anyone beating it to death (I know some ppl consider them pests and shoot them, but that's more humane)

Apparently ARFCOM loves Roly Polys the way they hate spiders. That being said, I've never seen so many grown men get in a tizzy over spiders before.

This is a spring-air pellet gun. Dry firing damages these types of pellet guns. The spring-driven piston slams into the end of the cylinder when there is not enough resistance.... when no pellet is loaded, for instance.
