If it is just a "bump" then I grab my G22. a pistol is a lot more handy for checking things out and maneuvering. If the door gets busted open in the middle of the night I grab my M1 Garand with the G22 in a holster. But the AR15 or shotgun would be fine, too.

For the scenario you mentioned I'd go with the Suppressed 11.5' SBR. Not sure how many intruders there are but that with a 30-rnd mag hopefully would be enough. Don't have to worry about damaging your children's hearing with the supressor which is nice.

I would love to keep my loaded XD45 near the bed, but I have a very active imagination when I sleep.
I get up and take pictures off the walls, take curtains down, etc, etc. I wake up down stairs on the couch or in the spare bedroom quite regularly and dont remember going there. Plus I play a lot of first person shooters and my wife is afraid I'll be going right for the gun. I do keep my 870 in the closest about 12 feet away. It's unloaded, but there are about 10 boxes of OO on the shelf right next to it. |

at this point all i have is a 14.5" AR with 75gr TAP in it next to the bed. but i'll be picking up a mossberg 590 and i'll probably have it loaded with 00 buck or a good turkey load.
But my room is at the end of the hallway, and anything i shoot will have to go thru the garage and a brick wall, so i feel safe with throwing any kind of round down range. I may lose my hearing, but the bad guy, sure as hell will be dead. |

Handgun while I go and get the kids. Shotgun or AR when I get back and the kids are stowed. I'd want something with a little more ass than a handgun after I get setup.

Mossberg 590 with a pistol grip loaded with #4 shot and mag tube mounted light on the bedroom ready rack.My wifes nightstand a Sig 220 on mine a Colt 1911 wilson combat modified.We dont have kids so its just us and when it comes to home invaders never go looking for them in your home as they will have the element of surprise instead our bedroom is the OK corral and if there brave enough to go snooping around after we know they are there and the police are on the way they can stumble on to us and wish afterward that they never broke in.

The 1911 is on the night stand. AR is in the closet as thats where I would barricade myself(cell phone is charged in the closet) until the police arrive.

Wow, lots of replies so far. Great stuff! I only ask because I have a few choices all of which i am very comfortable with and have trained with. I just wanted to know what everyone else thinks. I have an Mossberg 500 w/surefire forend, Saber 11.5' SBR with AAC M4-1000 and redi-mad (so 56 rounds should do), Glock 23 w/crimson trace and surefire x300 or Springfield XD Tactical w/x300 and AAC EVO-40. It does take practice and planning but the way we have trained is, I have the SBR at the ready, wife takes the kids with the G23 while I provide cover and gets the kids to the safe room. I cover the "funnel of death" until the police arrive. If I start to run dry, I can always fall back to the Mossberg in the closet. The way I see it is that if a gun fight breaks out they are coming for the shooter not the family in hiding. I have the opportunity to return fire from above and fall back if necessary.

KAC SR-15 E3 IWS , TR24 and a SF E2E in a Vtac mount with GS-2P sling is what I have as my saves the day rifle.
If I can I'd grab an AR over a handgun, every time. |

i keep the short one by the bed when i'm home + my G17 is never far away. the wife keeps her G23 close by at all times. both pistols with M3's, can't shoot what you can't see.
i'll be picking up a can early next year |

I would say the 870 12 gauge or Glock 22. I wouldn't use my ar inside because I like in a trailer park and my neighbors are right next to me. With these thin wall tuna cans a fmj 55 gr bullet would go through the BG and through who knows how many trailers.

I have a Glock ready.
Carrying a long arm just isn't practical in my circumstances. I have roommates, friends, friend's girlfriends, etc that could "go bump in the night". Tactical clearing of the house with a carbine or shotgun is impractical. I have a Glock(my carry pistol) ready at all times. If something seems odd I grab it and conceal it and check out the house and then go back to bed. If its the end of the world or mass riots occur in my hometown I'll have the AR ready. ... until then its the glock. |

As I roll out of bed its a Sig 226 (357 sig) When I get to the bed room door there is a 870 behind it. After i clear the house and determine the "bump" is coming from outside, I sling the 870 and grab the AR. When the smoke clears I have a cup of coffee.

i have a Maverick 88 12 gauge under my bed and my Springfield XD9 with hollow points on my night stand. My AR is hanging in my closet on a gun rack. They are all loaded but not chambered. I don't have any kids so its pretty safe.

What I have now is a SIG 226 w/tritium sights (9mm+P+) and a flashlight. I should have my Stevens M77 w/00 Buck according to the Truth guy...and he's probably right....but I still have the SIG.

A Smith & Wesson 4506 (45ACP DA/SA w/night sights) and a tac light are at my bed side. A Smith & Wesson M&P15T equipped with a red dot sight and a tac light is close by and in the room. The pistol gets me to the carbine protected.
