Sorry if this topic has been posted before but I would like to know what your "go to weapon is"  If a BG kicks in your door and you have  0:30 secs at most to arm yourself.

Scenario:

Asleep with wife and across the hall 2 children.  House Alarm goes off.  You can only grab one of these weapons which do you choose? Shotgun, Suppressed 11.5' SBR, Pistol or Suppressed Pistol?

What say you arfcomer's?

Cheers,

Algo

30 seconds?   Unless you live in Buckingham palace (in which case you're screwed because you can't have weapon there anyway...
) you ain't gonna have 30 seconds.  Door getting kicked in?  Try about a max of 10 seconds...and that is a max.  If the door caves in on the first kick you're probably down to about 5.

My weapon of choice is my shotgun that sits in a rack on my bedside.

I agree.  If someone knew where they were going, they could be in any room in my house within about 10 seconds.  Luckily, it only takes me about 2 seconds to get my 1911 out and light out.  I have an 870 too, but it's in the closet and would take a few more seconds to get to.

While we're spending all this $$$ on our bedside aresenal, let's not neglect to reinforce our home security package!

For about $100, you can significantly decrease the likelyhood of your door being kicked in by a dirtbag with the StrikeMaster II door frame reinforcement.

Motion detectors are inexpensive, and when someone steps on my front porch, I get an audible "ding" and a small red light goes on.

Adequate outside lighting, Alarm system, dog...  All this gives me more time to react if someone ever tries to kick in my door when I'm home, at which time I push the buttons on my bedside safe and grab my Glock 21 with 16 rounds of HST and a 30 round spare mag.  On the wife's side of the bed is a Glock 19 with 17 rounds of HST and another 17 round spare.

My house the dumbass would first have to get past the 3 rotties that roam the house freely.  If that was to happen they are better then I could have ever thought. Whatever or whoever is still in the house will meet Mr. 870  I do pray it never gets to that point.

My G30. Unless you're a dirtbag and owe somone a lot of money, or live in a shady part of town theres no real need for a an arsenal at your bedside.

While whatever you choose to defend yourself is your business, the rest of your logic is flawed. Home invasion robberies don't just happen to "dirtbags" or in "shady" areas. As a matter of fact, they are becoming a concern in "nicer" areas too.

BTW, I would go for my Mossberg 500.

My suppressed AR is beside the bed at night. Easier on my wife's & GSD's ears. Less freak out factor.
But noise notwithstanding, a 12g would work. Maybe better.
80%+ of people shot with pistols survive.
80%+ of people shot with rifles die.
The pistol is just to get to the rifle, IMHO.

i keep both my AR and my P91DC next to my bed.  If they come in my front door, they get the .40 because i don't have time to chamber a round and start clearing rooms with my AR. if i hear them downstairs, it's my AR all the way.

but in reality, it's whatever i feel better with. and i'm more likely to use my .40 because it keeps a round chambered, my AR never does. and i don't like the idea of it being chambered with the hammer back.

well, i keep the 1911 and .357 loaded and ready in my quick safe. the 870 sits in the glass cabinet with a row of shells by it. i have little kids, so nothing is "easy". either have to load the 870 after breaking glass, or punch the 5 digit combo in the night. about the same time, but breaking glass makes a lot of noise.

the 1911 is what i practice, the .357 is for the better half.

Rifle, sling up, make a lot of noise, head for the kid's room, secure family, defend from near the top of the stairs to take advantege of the funnel of death.  Call Police.  Don't converse.  Give one clear and loud order and blaze away.

It's not enough to know what to do.  You have to practice it when you have nothing else to do.

I scolded her a little bit but she's pretty independent.  She was gonna drag the body inside after the kwilling and claim self defense.

Only because I don't own a handgun yet, my Mossberg 590a shotgun.  But this is definitely theoretical as all my guns are in the safe in the garage.

So if something goes bump in the night I'd grab my pitching wedge... the damned thing won't hit what I'm aiming at anyways...

Pistol

No, it's not as capable as a carbine or a shotgun.  However, I think 0:30 seconds to arm is ridiculously generous.  It's more like 5 seconds or less.  I have to climb out of bed, grab my rifle, and shoulder it.  A pistol can be brought to bear in less than a second.  I can even fire it while still laying in my bed if I have to.

A pistol in hand > than a rifle I couldn't get too in time.

I keep a XD40 with tritium sights and a rail light on the nightstand.

If it's an end of the world-type scenario, hopefully I can fight my way to the safe.

A few years ago, I escorted an intruder out of our apartment with my 870. Since that experience I've gone back and forth about keeping a shotty or an AR in the bedroom. The XD won out for now because I don't have to take time to shoulder it, it's handy and ready to go. Regardless, I will never go to bed again without something within reach to protect my family.

Using an ar in a house is crazy you will shoot through to many walls and kill babies. I am really proud we are four pages deep and I am the first to poast this.
Currently I keep a G19 I will keep a carbine out for HD when I get a kid friendly storage option.

Just remember what ever you have you will generally feel like it is not enough. I have people in the house to worry about so i keep the pistol (23 w/ trijicons and light) handy.

If you are defending in place the choice is yours. Rifles and shotguns are much more lethal so they make the most sense. If you are retrieving children to a safe place or defending them in place the handgun makes more sense. Going out to confront intruders is very risky unless you need to or are trained to.

That being said just remember practice with your home defense gun in the dark or with your eyes closed (unloaded of course) till you can completey operate with no hesitation.

A plan is your best weapon. 2-3 plans are better.
