Sailor indicted in theft, sale of gun sights

A sailor from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island has been indicted for allegedly stealing high-tech gun sights and selling them to an illegal dealer.

Gunners Mate 1st Class Wilfred Bouton, 29, allegedly stole more than 50 Advanced Combat Optical Gunsights, known as ACOGs, from Navy facilities between September 2007 and June 2009, according to court documents.

He was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11, Navy records show.

Bouton allegedly sold the stolen equipment to a Florida man and the sights were eventually resold in the Unites States and overseas, according to the U.S. attorney, District of Connecticut.

The sights can be purchased online for about $800 each.

Bouton was arrested July 22 and was recently transferred to Connecticut after the indictment, which was unsealed Sept. 14. He faces one count of conspiring to traffic in stolen government property and one count of trafficking in stolen government property, which both carry sentences of up to five years in prison.

The grand jury also indicted two other men, to whom the ACOGS were allegedly sold and resold.

Bouton, of Lafayette, La., enlisted in 1999.
