connected to the global terrorist group Al Qaeda."
He was said to have been involved in the US Embassy Bombing in Kenya that killed 212 including 12 Americans.
The French are denying it but eyewitnesses claim to have seen French flags on the troops and seen the helicopters return to a French ship.

Somalia: airborne commando operation in southern foreign Islamist
(AFP) – Il ya 2 heures (AFP) - 2 hours ago

MOGADISHU - The "foreign troops" unidentified Monday led a rare
airborne operation on a village in southern Somalia, in an area
controlled by Islamist Shebab, for a ground vehicle whose occupants'
identity remains for now unknown.

The raid took
place around 13:30 local time (1030 GMT) in the vicinity of the village
Eril near the town of Barawe along the Somali coast, about 200 km south
of Mogadishu.

"There was a military
operation carried out by four foreign helicopters in the village Eril
cons of a car," he told AFP notable Barawe, Abdinasir Mohamed Adan.

Several of his passengers were taken aboard the helicopter,"
said this remarkable, interviewed by telephone from Mogadishu.

Other inhabitants of the
area confirmed the attack and reported several deaths among occupants
of the vehicle without being able to specify the identity of persons on
board the helicopters, or even if they were alive.

The aim of the operation, raid against an al-Qaida or hostage, was yet unknown.

The area is under the control of Islamist insurgents Shebab, who openly call for Al-Qaeda and its leader Osama bin Laden.

According to a senior Islamist in the area of foreign fighters of Al Qaeda reportedly among the victims of the raid.

The Shebab, who
control the south-central Somalia, would welcome in their ranks several
senior al-Qaeda, wanted for their alleged involvement in attacks
against U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in 1998, and cons
Israelis in Mombasa in 2002 (southern Kenya).

The most important among them is Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, a Comorian, who is on the FBI list of most wanted terrorists.

One of his accomplices Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, a Kenyan citizen also
wanted by U.S. authorities for the 2002 bombings in Mombasa, is
currently a refugee in southern Somalia.

According to a commander Shebab
Barawe, French helicopters took part in the operation on Monday, which
was immediately denied by the French staff.

"We receive reports of French military helicopters
attacked a car, destroying it completely and took passengers", said
local Islamic leader, who requested anonymity.

"There was no French operation, denied to Admiral Paris Christophe Prazuck.
"The French soldiers who are in the region operate within the EU
mission Atalante fight against maritime piracy and do not intervene
over the Somali territory," he added.

The Shebab currently hold a French agent held hostage in Mogadishu in July with another colleague. The latter has been released in late August, after officially escaped his captors.

Three foreign
aid workers were also kidnapped in July in the Kenyan border town of
Somalia, and have since been held hostage, apparently in the south.

Two journalists, a Canadian and an Australian, were held captive for a year in Somalia.

In May 2008, the military commander of the
Shebab, Adan Hashi Ayro, suspected of links with Al-Qaeda, was killed
in a U.S. airstrike.

Foreign helicopters attacked a vehicle in Al Shabab Islamist militias in Somalia

By Agencia EFE - 1 minute.

MOGADISHU, Sept. 14 (EFE) .- foreign helicopters attacked militant Islamic radicals today Al Shabab in southern Somalia and caused at least four people, Efe reported eyewitnesses, who did not specify the nationality of the aircraft.

A source from Al Shabab, who requested anonymity, told Efe that one of those killed in the attack was the Comorian Salah Al Nabhan, one of three Islamic radicals that the U.S. sought as alleged perpetrators of the 1998 bombings of the embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.

The other three dead were foreigners also allies of Al Shabab, although the source could not say either its identity or nationalities.

The witnesses, residents of the town of Eril, some 200 kilometers south of Mogadishu, said at least six helicopters participated in the operation against an ATV Al Shabab, which was destroyed, and that the crew landed to pick up the bodies of the victims.

"There were six helicopters and four were fired from different angles against a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Al Shabab, which was destroyed," Efe said Ahmed Omar, a resident of the town of Eril.

"The four helicopters landed to collect the bodies. They left the car, but they took the bodies of members of Al Shabab, who were at least two officials of the group and a driver," said Omar, although the militant group said there were four people that occupied the jeep.

So far, the sources consulted by Efe could not confirm the nationality of the attackers helicopters, but a head of Hezb al-Islam, an ally of al-Shabab, said may be "American or French."

U.S. blamed on Islamic radicals in Somalia, many of them now grouped in Al Shabab and Al Qaeda allies suspected of attacks against its embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, which killed 200 people.

Al Shabab is now the largest radical Islamic group in Somalia and control vast areas of central and southern Iraq, while trying to forcibly overthrow the government of President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, supported by the international community.

Several hundred foreigners, who are seen as linked to al Qaeda, supporting Al Shabab in their struggle against the government in Mogadishu, which has the backing of troops from Burundi and Uganda to the African Union Mission in Somalia ( AMISOM).

BBC:

Foreign soldiers have staged an attack on militants in Somalia, killing at least two people in a helicopter raid.

The
troops, who according to some reports had uniforms with French
insignia, attacked a vehicle carrying Islamists from the al-Shabab
group.

Witnesses said the soldiers took away two men, and there
were two bodies left in the road after the attack in the southern
coastal town of Barawe.

A French military spokesman denied its forces were involved.

"There was no French operation," said admiral Christophe Prazuck, spokesman for the armed forces' general staff.

He said the only French forces in the area were tackling pirates off the coast and did not intervene on land.

'Burning vehicle'

Unconfirmed reports claim that top al-Qaeda suspect Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan was killed in the attack.

Reuters
and Spanish news agency Efe reported witnesses and al-Shabab sources as
saying Kenyan-born Nabhan - who has been on the FBI's most-wanted list
for years - was killed.

He is suspected of bombing of an Israeli-owned hotel in Kenya and
attempting to shoot down an airliner in 2002, and two attacks on US
embassies in the region in 1998.

A village elder told the AFP news agency that four foreign helicopters had been involved in the Barawe raid.

"We
heard the explosion and saw two helicopters flying over us," said
Mohamed Ali Aden, a bus driver who drove past the burnt-out car minutes
after the attack.

"There was only a burning vehicle and two dead bodies lying beside."

Neither Somali government nor Islamist forces have helicopters.

French
commandos have launched raids in the past to rescue their citizens from
pirates or militants. There is a French military base in neighbouring
Djibouti.

The assault comes several weeks after a French
security adviser held by militants in Mogadishu managed to get free. A
colleague seized at the same time remains in captivity.

The US
has also carried out air strikes against Somali Islamist groups it
accused of links to al-Qaeda in recent years. It too has troops
stationed in Djibouti.

Somalia has not had a functioning central government since 1991.

Rival
Islamist factions are battling forces loyal to the weak UN-backed
government, which controls only small parts of the capital Mogadishu.

Allegedly he was involved in a plot to kill Hillary Clinton last month:

Kenyan authorities announced on September 5 that terrorists from
Somalia with alleged ties to al Qaeda planned three bomb attacks in
Nairobi while Hillary Clinton was there, August 4 – 7.

Electronic communications between the Nairobi terror cell and their
handlers in Somalia were intercepted by Kenyan anti-terror
investigators.

The plot, which was stopped by Kenyan security officials, was in the
final stages, and threatened the life of the Secretary of State.
Terrorists with links to the al Shabaab group were planning to bomb the
Hotel InterContinental where Hillary Clinton was staying. They were
also planning to bomb the Kencom Bus Stage, and the Hilton Hotel.

The masterminds of the attack were in contact with Saleh Nabhan, one
of the FBI’s most wanted. His personal assistant, Anas, is alleged to
have been coordinating the plot.

Five suspects, all Somalis, were arrested, including one carrying a
Danish passport with forged Danish identity papers. Danish officials
have no knowledge of the individual.

According to one Kenyan official:

While
in the past the real target of the attacks has been Western interests,
the al Qaeda leadership has since made Kenya a new target. So serious
is the threat that during the Agoa meeting, the Al Qaeda intended to
strike at the heart of Nairobi during the rush hours.

Al-Jazeera is blaming the French:

'Foreign troops' strike Shabab car

At least two al-Shabab fighters have been killed by foreign troops in a helicopter raid in southern Somalia, witnesses have said.

The soldiers fired from the air at a car in Barawe district on Monday.

Some witnesses described the helicopters as being French, although the French authorities have denied involvement. Other witnesses said they believed the helicopter was American.

Bashir Abdi, a resident in the area, told Reuters news agency that soldiers aboard two helicopters opened fire.

"The troops appeared to have French flags on the shoulders of their uniforms," Abdi said.

He said two people were killed and others captured by the soldiers.

Abdulkadir Muse, another resident, said al-Shabab fighters had exchanged fire with the commandos before all four people in the car were killed and their bodies taken by the foreigners.

'No French operation'

The French military denied its troops had been involved in the raid.

"There was no French operation," said admiral Christophe Prazuck, spokesman for the armed forces' general staff.

He said the French forces present in the region were operating within the framework of the European Union anti-piracy force Atalante and that "they did not intervene over Somali territory".

Dahir Ahmed, another resident, said the helicopters took off from a nearby warship

flying a French flag.

Somalia's weak government has very limited resources and does not have helicopters or other modern equipment.

Barawe district, about 250km south of the capital, Mogadishu, is controlled by al-Shabab fighters.

The group, which is fighting against the Somali government, is believed to be holding a French agent who was kidnapped in July.

Looks like we got 4 other "senior commanders" too. Stories differ about whether any were taken alive but it appears that some bodies were left behind and some other (alive or dead) were taken away in the helos.

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Suspected foreign commandos in helicopters
attacked a car in southern Somalia on Monday and killed one of the
region's most wanted militants, witnesses and a Somali government
source said.

Kenya-born Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, 28, was wanted over a hotel
bombing and simultaneous, but botched, missile attack on an Israeli
airliner leaving Kenya's Mombasa airport in 2002.

A senior Somali government source in Mogadishu told Reuters the
fugitive had been riding in a car with other Islamist insurgents when
they were attacked near Roobow village in Barawe District, some 250 km
(155 miles) south of the capital.

"Nabhan and four other top foreign commanders of militant groups were killed in the raid," the source said.

"These young fighters do not have the same skills as their
colleagues in Afghanistan or elsewhere when it comes to foreign
airstrikes," the government source added.

"They are in confusion now. I hope the world takes action."

Local man Bashir Abdi said the foreign commandos who carried out the
raid were wearing French flags on the shoulders of their uniforms. But
a spokesman for the French Defense Ministry, Christophe Prazuck, denied
any French soldiers were involved.

"We don't have any military presence in that region ... there are no forces in that territory," Prazuck said in Paris.

Western security agencies say the failed Horn of Africa state has
become a safe haven for militants, including foreign jihadists, who use
it to plot attacks in the region and beyond.

Nabhan is believed to have owned the truck used in the 2002 bombing
of an Israeli-owned beach hotel in Kenya that killed 15 people. He is
then thought to have fled to Somalia.

AL QAEDA SUSPECTS

The United States says another leading al Qaeda suspect who may be
in Somalia, Sudanese explosives expert Abu Talha al-Sudani, is believed
to have orchestrated the Mombasa attack.

Several residents and insurgent sources in Barawe said Nabhan was
among those killed in Monday's operation, but they declined to be named
for fear of reprisals.

French forces have launched commando raids in Somalia in the past to
rescue French nationals held by rebels and pirates. Paris maintains a
large military base in neighboring Djibouti.

Last month, one of two French security advisers kidnapped by Somali
insurgents in July managed to escape from his captors and fled to the
presidential palace in Mogadishu.

Neither the Somali government nor rebels have helicopters.

The U.S. military has also launched airstrikes inside Somalia,
targeting individuals Washington blames for the bombings of the U.S.
embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1988.

In May last year, U.S. war planes killed the then-leader of al
Shabaab and al Qaeda's top man in the country, Afghan-trained Aden
Hashi Ayro, in an attack on the central town of Dusamareb.

Under Ayro, al Shabaab had adopted Iraq-style tactics, including assassinations, roadside bombs and suicide bombings.

Somalia's fragile U.N.-backed government faces a stubborn insurgency
by al Shabaab and others. The United States accuses al Shabaab of being
al Qaeda's proxy in the lawless country.

Somali President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed's administration controls only
small parts of the nation's drought-ridden region and a few districts
of the bullet-scarred coastal capital.

Violence has killed more than 18,000 Somalis since the start of 2007 and driven another 1.5 million from their homes.

That has triggered one of the world's worst aid emergencies, with
the number of people needing help leaping 17.5 percent in a year to
3.76 million or half the population.

From the Times:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/africa/article6834451.ece

A prominent terrorist sought in connection with the 1998 US Embassy bombings in East Africa was reported to be among the dead yesterday after helicopter gunships attacked a village in southern Somalia, killing at least two Islamist militants.

Residents and Somali Government sources said that Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, a militant with links to al-Qaeda, died in the raid.

Witnesses said that up to four helicopters swooped on a convoy of vehicles before opening fire. The attack took place close to the coastal town of Barawe, about 150 miles south of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, and deep inside territory controlled by al-Shabaab, an Islamist insurgent group.

After destroying one vehicle, white-skinned commandos — described as French or American — were seen getting out of the helicopters and seizing at least two survivors.

Abdinasir Mohamed Adan, a local elder, said: “There was a military operation carried out by four foreign choppers in Erile village. A car was destroyed. We are also hearing that some of the vehicle’s passengers were taken on the choppers.

Mohamed Ali Aden, a bus driver who passed the burnt-out car, said: “There was only a burning vehicle and two dead bodies lying beside it.”

Nabhan and other foreign fighters, many of whom have joined Somalia’s Islamist insurgents in recent months, were reported to have been in the car.

In Mogadishu, a Government source said: “Nabhan and four other foreign commanders of militant groups were killed.

Intelligence and other sources in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, told The Times that Nabhan may have been killed, but warned that other militants had been presumed dead in the past, only to resurface later.

“What I’m hearing is that an al-Shabaab convoy of one Land Cruiser, with important foreigners, supported by technicals [improvised battle wagons] was attacked,” said an intelligence source who had spoken with al-Shabaab leaders on the ground. He said that the Land Cruiser was destroyed and that Nabhan was thought to be among the passengers. Western diplomats were unwilling to comment before his body had been identified but, if true, his killing will be welcomed in Washington.

Nabhan is seen as one of the most high profile al-Qaeda linked terrorists operating in Somalia. In March 2008, the US Navy fired Tomahawk missiles at a village in southern Somalia where he was believed to be. This followed similar strikes in 2007.

The Kenyan-born 30-year-old is wanted by the FBI. Three Israelis and ten Kenyans died when three suicide bombers blew themselves up at Mombasa’s Paradise Hotel in 2002, after terrorists missed hitting a Tel Aviv-bound plane with surface-to-air missiles nearby. Nabhan is thought to have masterminded both attacks.

Nabhan is also wanted by Kenya for his role in the August 1998 bombings of US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam that killed more than 200.

Navy Seals from U.S. Special
Operations Forces conducted a raid in southern Somalia on Monday that
killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, one of 4 co-conspirators wanted in the
2002 bombing of an Israel owned hotel in Mombasa, Kenya, two senior
U.S. military officials told FOX News.

Ten
days ago President Obama signed the Execute Order for Nabhan, who since
2006 was on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists. He was also
wanted for the attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Kenya in 1998.

Two
MH-6 Little Bird helicopters deployed from one of two U.S. Navy vessels
near Somalia's coast strafed a vehicle Nabhan was using to go back and
forth between meetings. Intelligence operatives had been monitoring
Sabhan prior to the attack. The helicopters passed once, firing on the
vehicle, and then circled back around to retrieve the body so they
could make a positive identification, according to one official.

The
attack in Mombasa took place on Nov. 28, 2002 — involving a bomber that
blew up the lobby of the Israeli owned Paraise hotel. On the same day
the attackers unsuccessfully attempted to shoot down an Israeli owned
Boeing 757 civilian jetliner run by Arkia. They fired surface to air
missiles and missed.

The helicopters passed once, firing on thevehicle, and then circled back around to retrieve the body so theycould make a positive identification, according to one official.

Theattack in Mombasa took place on Nov. 28, 2002 — involving a bomber thatblew up the lobby of the Israeli owned Paraise hotel. On the same daythe attackers unsuccessfully attempted to shoot down an Israeli ownedBoeing 757 civilian jetliner run by Arkia. They fired surface to airmissiles and missed.

Nabhan's Somali group, Al- Shabaab, has links to Al Qaeda.

They strafed him? Fuck yeah! So old school; I love it!

EDIT: So here's the next question: was it a 30mm chain gun, .50-cals, or a 7.62mm minigun? Oh the possibilities!

For 160th?
Most likely a DAP-hawk 30mm wing-mount gun...
'Standard' SOAR weapons -> 30mm (Blackhawk, fixed foreward-firing, mounts on a wing hardpoint), 7.62mm minigun (Door guns on 'hawks & 'hooks, also MH-6 hardpoint-mounted)...
The only Army helo that carries a M2 is the OH-58... 160th doesn't fly 58s...

Haha, nice. Strafing, taking out the bodies, etc.

Like a military blogger I read said, "Say what you like about President Obama’s domestic politics, this is the sort of high risk, boots on the ground operation that Bill Clinton never would have authorized."

I hope we see more of this.

Another version of the story with a slightly different eye-witness report:

U.S. military officials say American special forces
staged an attack in southern Somalia Monday and killed a Kenyan-born
terrorist suspect.
Witnesses in the area said soldiers in at
least two helicopters fired on a vehicle near the southern town of
Barawe, killing at least two passengers and wounding two others.
U.S. officials say the attack killed Saleh Ali Saleh
Nabhan, whom authorities have linked to al-Qaida.  Nabhan was wanted by
U.S. intelligence for questioning about attacks against a hotel and a
plane in Mombasa, Kenya, in 2002.
Authorities say special forces troops have taken his body into U.S. custody.
Earlier
reports said those involved in Monday's raid appeared to be French, but
the French military has denied staging a raid in Somali territory.
The Barawe area is controlled by the insurgent group al-Shabab, which is fighting to topple the Somali government.
The
United States considers al-Shabab a terrorist organization, and has
accused it of having links to al-Qaida and giving refuge to terrorism
suspects.

So what does that combined with the earlier reports give us?

Operation Celestial Balance:

1) Nabhan and four other senior foreign fighters were traveling in a Landcruiser guarded by at least two technicals
(Somali govt report)

2) Two MH-6 Little Birds strafed the convoy, two more helicopters (MH-47s/MH-60s?) were possibly involved
(MH-6: US Mil via FoxNews, 4 Helicopters total: eyewitness reports)

3) All 5 foreign fighters were killed
(Somali govt report) but only two bodies were left behind (eyewitness reports)

4) Nabhan's body was retrieved for identification
(US Mil via FoxNews)

5) Two survivors
(possibly wounded) were probably captured (eyewitness reports, supports the claim of 4 helos)

Here's a few new articles on the operation. Sources say that Navy SEALs with Joint Special Operations Command were the ones involved. (DEVGRU/ST6)

Somali Insurgents Vow to Avenge U.S. Raid That Killed Al Qaeda Suspect

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A U.S. raid killed one of Africa's most wanted al-Qaida suspects sought in connection with a deadly hotel bombing, and Somalia's powerful insurgent group vowed Tuesday to avenge the American attack.

Two senior members of al-Shabab, who asked that their names not be used because they are not authorized to speak publicly, said their fighters will retaliate for the raid that killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan on Monday.

"They will taste the bitterness of our response," one of the commanders told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The commando-style action took place amid growing concerns that al-Qaida is gaining a foothold in this lawless nation.

Many experts fear Somalia is becoming a haven for al-Qaida, a place for terrorists to train and gather strength much like Afghanistan in the 1990s. Last year, U.S. missiles killed reputed al-Qaida commander Aden Hashi Ayro — marking the first major success after a string of U.S. military attacks in 2008.

Nabhan is a Kenyan wanted for questioning in connection with the car bombing of a beach resort in Kenya and the near simultaneous attempt to shoot down an Israeli airliner in 2002. Ten Kenyans and three Israelis were killed in the blast at the hotel. The missiles missed the airliner.

Two U.S. military officials said that forces from the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command were involved in Monday's raid in southern Somalia. The officials gave no details about the target, and they spoke on condition of anonymity because the operation was secret.

But the deputy mayor for security affairs in Somalia's capital, citing intelligence reports, confirmed Nabhan was killed. Abdi Fitah Shawey did not elaborate.

Somali witnesses to Monday's raid say six helicopters buzzed an insurgent-held village near Barawe, some 155 miles (250 kilometers) south of Mogadishu, before two of the aircraft opened fire on a vehicle, killing two and wounding two.

Ernst Jan Hogendoorn, Horn of Africa Project Director of the International Crisis Group, said the "surgical" precision of Monday's raid shows that U.S. has specific intelligence in Somalia.

"I think it will certainly make al-Shabab leaders much more cautious when they are operating because obviously the United States has very precise intelligence about their movements," he said.

Like much of Somalia, Barawe and its surrounding villages are controlled by the militant group al-Shabab, which the U.S. accuses of having ties to al-Qaida. Al-Shabab, which has foreign fighters in its ranks, seeks to overthrow the government and impose a strict form of Islam in Somalia.

The U.N.-backed government, with support from African Union peacekeepers, holds only a few blocks of Mogadishu, the war-ravaged capital.

Commando raid in Somalia is latest in covert operations across the globe

By Bill Roggio September 15, 2009 10:25 AM

Yesterday's daring raid in southern Somalia that targeted and killed a senior al Qaeda leader wanted for several deadly attacks is the latest in a series of covert operations carried out by US and allied special operations. At least four other high-profile raids by ground forces took place in Pakistan, Madagascar, and Syria over the past several years, while others have gone unreported, according to US officials.

The successful Somali raid targeted Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, a senior al Qaeda leader in East Africa as well as a senior leader in Shabaab, al Qaeda's surrogate in Somalia. Nabhan is thought to train terrorists in Somalia and has been at the forefront in cementing ties between Shabaab and al Qaeda. He has been wanted for his involvement in the 1998 suicide attacks against US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, as well as leading the cell behind the 2002 terror attacks in Mombasa, Kenya, against a hotel and an airliner.

Reports of the operation are still unclear as the US military has refused to comment. But various press accounts from eyewitnesses and unnamed intelligence sources provide a glimpse of the operation.

The operation, dubbed Celestial Balance, was approved 11 days ago after US intelligence determined that Nabhan was shuttling back and forth between the Shabaab-controlled port cities of Merka and Kismayo. A car transporting Nabhan and five other foreign fighters was escorted by another car carrying three Shabaab escorts; the vehicles were hit as they stopped for breakfast as they traveled to Kismayo.

According to one witness, upwards of six helicopters were involved in the raid. At least two AH-6 Little Bird special operations attack helicopters strafed the two-car convoy. Other helicopters dismounted Navy SEALs, who seized the body of Nabhan and another, and purportedly took two other wounded fighters captive. An unconfirmed report indicated that Sheikh Hussein Ali Fidow, a senior Shabaab leader, was among those killed. All nine al Qaeda and Shabaab leaders and fighters were killed during the operation.

Somali raid similar to covert raids in Pakistan, Madagascar, and Syria

While yesterday's raid in Somalia is being hailed as a shift in the US war to target al Qaeda's leadership, as opposed to the unmanned airstrikes against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Pakistan's tribal areas as well as attacks in Somalia and Yemen, in fact the US has previously pulled the trigger on other direct action missions - operations involving troops entering enemy territory.

Four such direct action missions against wanted al Qaeda leaders have been carried out in the Middle East and in Africa over the past several years.

The largest such raid took place in March 2006 against a training camp in Danda Saidgai in the Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan, Pakistan. US special operation teams raided an al Qaeda camp run by the Black Guard, the elite Praetorian Guard for Osama bin Laden, Ayman al Zawahiri, and other senior al Qaeda leaders.

The air assault resulted in the death of Imam Asad and several dozen members of the Black Guard. In addition to being the camp commander, Asad was a senior Chechen al Qaeda commander and an associate of Shamil Basayev, the Chechen al Qaeda leader killed by Russian security forces in July 2006. US intelligence believed either Zawahiri or bin Laden were at the camp at the time of the raid.

The next high-profile raid took place in the least likely of places, on the island nation of Madagascar. In January 2007, US commandos struck at Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, one of Osama bin Laden's brother-in-laws with deep roots in al Qaeda as a financier and facilitator, as he visited his home there.

US intelligence had waited for Khalifa to leave the safety of Saudi Arabia and targeted him when he was most vulnerable, US intelligence officials have told The Long War Journal. The raid was made to look like a robbery; Khalifa's computer and other documents were stolen.

The next US commando raid again took place in Pakistan, when US special operations forces assaulted the village of Musa Nikow in Pakistan's Taliban-controlled tribal agency of South Waziristan. The raid was controversial; Pakistani authorities claimed that civilians were killed during the raid. The target of the raid is unclear, and no senior al Qaeda or Taliban leader was reported killed or captured.

The last known direct action mission targeted and killed a senior al Qaeda leader based in eastern Syria. US commandos assaulted a compound in the town of Sukkariya near Abu Kamal, across the border from Al Qaeda in Iraq, and killed Abu Ghadiya and several members of his staff.

Ghadiya was the leader of al Qaeda's extensive network that funnels suicide bombers, foreign fighters, weapons, and cash from Syria into Iraq along the entire length of the Syrian border.

Other such direct action missions have taken place but have avoided the scrutiny of the media, US intelligence officials told The Long War Journal.

From a co-worker, the wife of one of those involved.

They were watching his movements for some time, had intel that he was on the move with several other ranked targets; a perfect scenario.

Obama signed off on this  as soon as it was presented to him. He knew they couldn't put this guy in Gitmo any longer and did not want him here where he could face trial and all of the attendant publicity. He is apparently reluctant to have "an incident" on his watch and is willing to sign the termination orders readily. I don't like him but he has a thumbs up from me if this is the way he is going to deal with shitbags.

The good guys were waiting off Djibouti and went in in helos. They made clean kills, spent less than 30 minutes on the ground and recovered a lot of valuable evidence including cell phones.

That evidence is on its way back here and includes a finger...no bodies coming back...

As has been reported, this thing has been a major win for the FBI as he was one of their most wanted targets. They were heavily involved all the way through. The information given to the news agencies is purposely vague so as to let it blend in with every other report about operations against insurgents but it is considered amongst the most significant achievement for a long time.

The target was also heavily involved in assisting in the "education" of young US born Somalis in the Mosques here and then taking them to Somalia to train them in terrorist tactics then sending them back home. They are still here.

It isn't any kind of top secret information, it was just that the "uppers" were playing it down a little, those involved at a different level were only too willing to share the story. I think/hope that there will be an escalation of incidents such as this now that PC has been taken out of the equation. They have been after this guy for some time.

Now, it's time to upgrade someone else to fill Mr. Dead Shitbag's spot in the Top ten list...
