It's not really. It's is still a free country after all and if folks don't want their kids to participate in the Hitler Youth program they can opt out.
Just that simple.

The ARFcom motto is not relevant here: "It's OK, as long as a Republican is doing it."

ETA: Sorry, nevermind. Added the "not" (in red). I misunderstood the situation. Again, my apologies.

I think it was the Department of Education's little Q&A sessions that it was recommending, following the speech, that has people up in arms. I personally will be calling the schools tomorrow.

Sorry OP, but

I may be wrong, but I don't believe that either Reagan or Bush (either Bush, for that matter) did what Obama is doing.  In fact, I was in school for the entirety of the Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations, and none of them ever closed-circuited themselves into our classrooms to speak to us.  I'm sure that all three at some point visited a school, but none of them exhibited the creepy arrogance of Obama by inserting themselves into childrens' daily routines.

Fuck Obama.

ETA:  And Nixon's second term, such as it was.  He didn't do it either.

Fuck Obama again.

I wonder if Reagan or Bush sent out prep materials that included childrens' books about themselvesof had suggested assignments titled "What can I do to help the President."

Two reasons:

1.  Everything Obama has done since starting office - EVERYTHING - has been a politically calculated move intent on destroying the strength of our country and its foundations.  Parents have good reason to be vigilant.

2. When this thing first came out, there was a damn essay that kids were supposed to write about how they would "help the President."  Very North-Korea-ish.

The topic says you can't spell a recent President's last name for shit.  It also says that your shift key is broken.

Upon further review, the topic that says it all doesn't cast you in a very positive light.  Maybe the topic does say it all?

This. We watched the moon launch, that was HISTORY, this is nothing like that, this is a president who is using his position as a bully pulpit for HIS own motives.

Reagan addressed school kids re: the war on drugs and I forget what Bush Sr did. AT the time the Dems beat on Reagan and especially Bush Sr (calling his speech a "campaign speech").

WHile I dont like Obama the office does carry weight and if the speech was kept in the vein of "stay in school and work hard" I could grudgingly deal with that. However, it was the DoE provided "classroom activities" that were drawn up by White House staffers that I object too. Neither Reagan or Bush did that or even attempted to do that.

I see the Great Leaders team is in full damage control mode now saying they are modifying or withdrawing the activities and now the speech will be available for parents to read- supposedly- on Monday. If previous transparency is any guide the speech will be released at 3 AM PST on Tuesday for review.

Reagan talked about self reliance and working hard..believing that you can make a difference i your own future.

Obama wants them to believe in him and that his vision is part of their future. Big difference.

Obama is trying cultivate a following and remember he is a Marxist...this is not a Marxist nation! For the last freaking time....we do not want Obama addressing our children or even talking to them. I say "we" and "our" meaning conservatives, there is nothing positive he has to offer. Nothing! This is about him and his vision for America...and how the kids of this country can help HIM make HIS vision come to pass.

(Edited to say he was addressing me as a college student..not as a child.)

This

The lesson plan sent out by the D.O.E. to go with the speech........

"That's where they kind of got into a slippery spot. Federal statute denies any authority to the Department of Education to provide any kind of curriculum or anything that can be passed down to the state, and that's part of the statute forming the Department of Education. So they kinda got themselves into this mess because they didn't really understand some of the key legal roles or the dos and don'ts at the federal Department of Ed," she said.

From the news article on google news, they said Obama is the first pres to have a speech directly to the children.

I just find it weird that he is everywhere on tv, there are all sorts of parenting commercials where he is talking about being a good parent. I just find it odd...

EDIT: I've read another story that Bush 1 gave a 15 min speech to children about the dangers of drugs, so I guess that counts

I was in school from 1980 to 1993, so if Reagan or Bush 41 had ever given speeches to kids, I'm pretty sure I would have remembered it.

As it is, I don't remember it, but I *do* remember that until about 1992, we didn't have televisions in classrooms, and when we got them, the only thing we could watch was some 'channel 1' thing that we never actually watched.

Reagan's & Bush's speech talked about things like don't do drugs, and stay in school. It was televised for all to see.

Obama's has additional lesson plans for before and after. The kids will be discussing things like "how can we be of service to the president". (my kid doesn't serve the president, he serves us). The "I Pledge" video (which I believe is part of this) is political. It talks subtly about topics like health care. Not so subtly about "stem cell research". It's plastered with the "O" logo. Not the seal of the president of the US. It's Obama-glorification, and Leftist propaganda.

I did not read all the post, but here is my reason for not letting my children watch.

I would not let a person whom I do not trust and disagreed with on everything from religion to social structure, and moral obligation sit down with my kids and have a talk with them.

Period. I don't trust the man, so he does not get to talk to my kids.

It would kinda be like letting Slick Willy sit down with your girlfriend
