I'm going on Feb 5 to take a test for a corrections officer and I have a few questions if anyone can answer them for me? First off what is the test like? Is it like the PD test or are they different? Next Can you carry off duty? Thanks for the help.

Striker IS a C.O.. He can answer most of your questions I'm sure. I worked in a correctional setting for a time. It seems that the questions you are asking is more or less a local jurisdiction issue. the test there will not be the same as elsewhere. As to carrying off duty, I doubt it unless it is as a private citizen with a ccw. You will be trained with weapons in the begining, but will not carry often if at all. Most will only arm the Officers at the gates, in a tower or patroling the perimeter. And then it will probably be with a pump shotgun or a revolver.(true in S.C. ymmv)

Been a Fed for 12 yrs. and just don't remember a "test" like you seem to be using the word. I applied, submitted a resume, got interviewed, background/security checked, and accepted. I have heard that landing a CO job is a lot more competitive now than in 1990 and, I was, am, and was hired as, an electrician and an Officer. That being said, practically every permanent employee of the Federal Bureau is considered a LEO and will go to the Academy in Glynco, GA.   As to the ? of carrying...NOT off-duty. It is NOT authorized to carry off-duty NOR WILL YOU EVER be authorized to carry a personal weapon. Most that desire to, at least in Florida, get a CCW from the State and carry that way.  No one carries inside. Get a good night's sleep, be honest with your answers, and Good Luck.

Ok , I'll give it a shot for you:

Here in NYC Correction Officers take a written exam which is similar but not identical to the P.O. exam. Alot of the test is reading a regualtion and applying it to various situations .

In New York State C.O.'s are Peace Officers with arrest powers both On and Off duty and carry On duty on perimeter posts and while transporting /escorting inmates throughout the state and have full carry authority off duty.

One thing I know is that every state does it differently.

Atlantic County NJ, we are Civil service, we go to an academy, carry off duty, have arrest authority, and according to NJ law, I have jurisdiction over a PO, as I am county.before the end of their first and not come back. We are the highest turnover as a LEO. MOst can not do the job.
only a few people carry on duty as we do not carry inside. I haveseen many men walk out
As for GunlvrPHD, ther term prison guard is offensive, especially from someone that does not have the guts to walk a tier.
