So a coworker tells me her BF is into guns.

I meet him, when he comes to pick her up from work. he has an Obama sticker on his car, some other Mass. style libbo bumper stickers, too (Greenpeace, Rainbow, 1-20-09, all the usual suspects).

He also is wearing a ball cap that says "Liberal With Guns". (He's a hunter, it seems...)

I laugh. I ask him is he's a Fudd. He looks at me like: .

His GF laughs, because she knows what I mean. She says to him, as she gets into his car, "I'll explain it to you later."

I await the response.

He probably just has a RemChester "thirty-aught-six" with an un-zeroed Simmons scope.

I can never understand how gun owners could be liberal. Their DC counterparts are always trying to restrict their rights to own them. I guess they own guns that the libs aren't trying to ban.

I think they don't get this poem:

In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Eventually they will come for your gun. They will ban the scary looking ones first and scary "cop killing" ammo and accessories. Then they will come after the sporting arms (deer rifles, shotguns, .22, etc)

Liberal gun owners, specially ones that continue to vote for liberal democrat politicians, have their own brand of denial and stupidity.  Don't think about it, it will only make your head hurt.

I'm a liberal gunowner.
In the sense of Thomas Jefferson.

What most call liberals today, are anything but.

Easy to explain.

Liberals, in general, like most people, want to to be free to do the things they want to do.  That includes things like keeping the money they earn and having the guns they want to have.

They just don't want YOU to do those things, and they're willing to use the police power of government to stop you.

Their problem isn't with THEM having freedom, its with YOU having it, and the reason is that you just aren't to be trusted with it.

Very similar to the way a lot of conservatives are about the War on Drugs,  and homos getting married.

All this is, of course, keeping in mind that the terms "Conservative" and "Liberal" have become somewhat anachronistic, especially here in America, as FA Hayek noted in his 1973 work "Liberalism":

It should be mentioned here that the USA never developed a liberal movement comparable to that which affected most of Europe during the nineteenth century, competing in Europe with the younger movements of nationalism and socialism and reaching the height of its influence in the 1870s and thereafter slowly declining but still determining the climate of public life until 1914. The reason for the absence of a similar movement in the USA is mainly that the chief aspirations of European liberalism were largely embodied in the institutions of the United States since their foundation, and partly that the development of political parties there was unfavourable to the growth of parties based on ideologies. Indeed, what in Europe is or used to be called 'liberal' is in the USA today with some justification called 'conservative'; while in recent times the term 'liberal' has been used there to describe what in Europe would be called socialism. But of Europe it is equally true that none of the political parties which use the designation 'liberal' now adhere to the liberal principles of the nineteenth century.

My wife and I are both VERY conservative and live in a historically conservative are (Southwest Virginia). We have such conservative values, that we moved from NJ/Eastern PA where we grew up because of the mindset of people in that area, among other reasons.

That said, her uncle, who has lived in FL, NC, and now SWVA, is very big into the outdoors, survival, hunting, all types of guns, etc. etc. He has built several AKs from scratch, has his C&R license, and collects all types of weapons (not just guns, but knives, swords, etc.). His lifestyle, demeanor and look all scream NRA-conservative-survivalist.

However, he is absolutely the MOST LIBERAL(politically) person that I know. I truly think that he worships Obama as the messiah. It is absolutely disgusting, and he will not listen to any reasoning or rational/logical thoughts, nor will he even have a constructive debate on anything political.

ETA, I just found out that his parents are uber-conservative racist hillbillies, and I believe his political views stem from a rebellion against any of the views shared by his parents.... What a shame.

It's quite simple people: Liberal gun owners exist because they don't consider guns their primary issue. When they think about "assault rifles" and "handguns," they don't think "inalienable right that I cannot allow anyone to infringe upon." Instead, they merely picture a cool piece of hardware that their government currently allows them to own (if they happen to live in a free state, anyway).

Things like the poor illegal aliens and their anchor babies suffering in ram shackle huts because they don't have free health care, a good education or a nice place to live, tugs at their heart strings a bit harder. So does the impending destruction of the entire world from global warming. So does the civil rights movement concerning gay marriage and abortion. So does "Bush lied, people died." Etc. etc. etc.

Guns are just a convenience, and if they lose assault rifles and pistols... well, so what? They've still got their shotguns and bolt rifles, so they can still defend themselves/go skeet and target shooting/go hunting/etc. "Tyrannical government" never crosses their mind. "Multiple attackers" never crosses their mind. "Force multiplier" never crosses their mind. They're simply not wired that way.

All great points but the moment you point out hypocrisy on "OUR" side you pretty much kill discussion around here.

Not only 'how can gun owners be liberals", but why are so many musicians liberal, when in the 80s liberals wanted to bypass the 1st amendment and censor thier music?

This is very true. I speak from experience as I used to think that I was a liberal with a gun. They do have their own brand of denial and stupidity. They can also be fairly easy to convert depending on the person.
