Guy had it labeled as .308 AP 500rds for $350.
I asked where it was made and the guy said France 
I got him down on price by a decent amount and bought it all, so what did I buy

Its hard to find real 7.62x51 AP now. They don't sell new factory .308 AP anymore because of ATF pressure IIRC. They did the same to the .308 Accelerator too.

It is French (Societe Francaise des Munitions), but there's no telling what it's loaded with until you pull a bullet.

It was definitely made in France. SF is short for Societe Francaise des Munitions, and I believe 71 references 1971. As far as caliber is concerned, I don't know. Does it chamber in a .308 rifle?

Looking at the headstamp, you got yourself some SF 71 better known as "San Fransisco 71". It's easily identifiable by the black mascara around the neck.

AP or not it really doesn't matter to me but I got a good deal on the ammo which is why I bought it.

Yep 1971 French ball.....probably corrosive. If it shoots like their 7.5x54mm of the same vintage expect bucket size groups.....
great collector ammo..........

Maine Cartridge sold some 7.62 x 51 AP a few years ago. They remanufactured it with pulled FN 162 gr AP bullets.
You can still buy pulled AP bullets if you look around. Buy a thousand of them and sit on 'em. |

Looks like a nickel-copper jacket. The little plus sign is NATO. Not seen the "SF" mark. I'd say deffinatley not AP.
I hate buying loose rounds. It can be a sign that they were supposed to be demilled i.e. not suitable for shooting. A lot of people have shot a lot of loose packed rounds, though. Hope you got a good deal on them. It really sucks that we are reduced to buying this shit for high prices. I doubt the days of $100/1k rds will ever return eta: It really pisses me off that dealers label this shit when they have no fucking clue what it is. Cavaet emptor like a M F . |
