That's hilarious!

BTW, if you haven't seen it yet you should go out and rent the documentary/comedy "Trekkies".

That's the funniest damned movie I've seen in a long time, even picked it up on the bargain rack at blockbuster. A must see.

My favourite line is these guys have a convention in Ohio somewhere every year and they're talking about its popularity growing when one of them says (completely serious), "..yeah, and this year a girl even showed up!" lol!

Actually the Galileo was NCC-1701/7.  I think.  I don't know what 1701-D is supposed to represent, but I never watched any "Treks" other than the original TV series.

God I am even a bigger geek than I thought!

And KBaker's comment re "maroon" is not a typo but rather a clever reference to the episode where the giant ape-type creatures are busy throwing rocks at the shuttlecraft while the crew, especially Dr. McCoy, is busy causing problems for Mr. Spock.  And they fix it by draining power from their phasers and taking off.

OK, some bigger geek than me name that episode!

That episode was "Galileo 7".  7 because the number of crewman marooned was 7.  1701-D because the previous 1701,1701A,1701B, and 1701C had been blowed up already.

No... you just know some trivia.  He may actually drive that thing!  Way cool... but only if you compare it with the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile!

And yes... the shuttlecraft did indeed have the hull number and name of the "mother ship" painted on them, in addition to the specific shuttlecraft names, such as "Galileo".

For extra geek points, who knows another shuttlecraft name from the Original Series?

If you look really hard you will notice that the front of the "craft" has the number: 1701-A while the side has 1701-D

I think this is a parts vehicle built from several shuttlecraft..[:D]

Anyone remember an episode where Kirk and co. were beseiged by a giant robot spacecraft which resembled a cone shaped turd and had an appetite for whole planets?

Or what about Kirk fighting the green guy and wasting him with a bamboo cannon with rocks as projectiles and rudimentary black powder for propellant?

I need to step away now.[BD]Nerd!!

1701-D was the Enterprise from Next Generation.  This shuttle is modeled after some of the ones on that ship.  They usually did say Enterprise on them, along with their individual names.

A berserker.  The episode was an homage to Fred Saberhagen's stories -- good stuff if you like older ("real") science fiction.

Lesseee - the cone-shaped turd was in "Doomsday Machine" (destroyed with an antimatter snack, IIRC) and I don't remember the name of the one with the bamboo cannon, but I liked dragging blackpowder into the 23d century...  BTW - the green dude was a Gorn.

Ah memorable Star Trek lines . . .

"You will be absorbed."

"I am Nomad.  I am perfect."

"Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not an escalator!"

"You will all die horribly!  In searing paaaaain!"

And of course, the ubiquitous, "He's dead, Jim."

This is a somewhat poor job of making a shuttle craft.

1. Below the front windshield he has NCC-1701-A the registry # of Enterprise-A.

2. On the rear he has 1701-D, the registry number of the Enterprise-D, as seen in "Star Trek the Next Generation".

It looks like he was aiming for the look of an Original Series shuttle, but didn't get much right. He really needs to look at some of the blueprints that are available.

Other than the ID being wrong, it looks pretty neat.

endersgame: Enterprise 1701-A was never blown up. It was called back to home port to be decommissioned

That one was called "Arena", and it was (very loosely) based on a kick-ass short story by Frederic Brown of the same name.  No bamboo cannon involved.  I remember this, because "Arena" was in an anthology entitled The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Vol. I, which I read the cover off of.  The episode was obviously based on the story, and I remember the titles matched.

Kbaker,
was that the story with the human and the octopus-like alien in two invisible cages bordering each other? They couldn't get to each other, but they had to figure out how so they could fight to the death for the survival of their species?  I read that years ago in a Sci-Fi short story collection.  Later, I saw that episode of Trek, and all I could think about was that story.
Link Posted: 1/18/2002 7:33:10 AM EDT
[#50]
That's the one  The alien was a little rolling ball with multiple retractable appendages and no eyes, but a crude mental telepathy.  One human and one alien were placed in an arena of blue sand, rocks, vegetation and a few little lizards with an invisible barrier between them.  You could hurl rocks through the barrier, but the two combatants couldn't get through the barrier to each other.  Whoever won decided the fate of their race.  Helluva story.
