It's a black rat snake.  I was walking to a nice comfortable looking white oak tree to sit up against and call from and I saw him on the ground.  He froze and played dead as they usually do, until I got a little close, then he assumed the position and made cute little striking motions toward me, then reared up and froze as you see in the picture.  He was only about two feet long.

I snapped the picture and we went our seperate ways.  He in search of beetles and lizards,  I in search of my elusive feathered quarry.   I hope his luck was better than mine.

I could never get close to a racer. Corn snakes all the time , racers would just haul ass everytime I tried to snag one.
