With as few F-22's as we have, and as many as we need, it really is huge loss. It's not like Komrad obama will allow for a replacement to be purchased.

I hope the pilot is ok. Test flights can be pretty hairy, trying to make things break or pushing the limits. I used to hate test flights on Huey's after a engine or transmission overhaul.

Just spoke with a guy I work with who used to work F-16 flight test out at Edwards during the same time F-22 was undergoing its first phases of flight test.
He said if he had to put $$ on it, that it was probably the structurual test bird because its the one that does crazy multi-G test maneuvers, the electronics and avionics test birds stick around the 1G manuever range. He also said its not a good sign that the condition of the pilot is unknown...

Why didn't they just update, and re-start production on F-15's? I was at Edwards in 2000 when they debuted the F-22. They had a dogfight demo with Chuck Yeagar st the stick of a F-15, and a cocky ass young combat pilot behind the F-22. Chuck's old ass owned the youngster.

The F-22 had just debuted and the pilots were still learning how to utilize it as they transfered from F-15 squadrons. The same effect has been documented before with other aircraft. On top of that new pilots typically do better on new airframes than old transitioning pilots because they have no "pre-programmed" notions of how to fly it. Silent Eagle Is what you are essentially talking about and what you end up with is a bird that is still not as capable as the F-22... ETA Just got confirmation that it was the structural test bird... |

The F-15 is garbage compared to the current F-22. The F-22 had and still has kinks to work out, but with what we have now, it curb stomps the F-15. The F-22 can go up against 15 F-15s and come out on top, without even getting locked on to. I've heard pilots say they've been tailed closely by an F-22 and not even know it was there. They really are wicked. The F-15 is being upgraded, and being made more "stealthy" now, but we're still getting rid of them, and pretty much only doing the upgrades for foreign countries. |

But other than that, whenever they trained against other aircraft, the F-22 won and didn't even come close to breaking a sweat. The F-22 is THE BEST fighter on the planet, it's way ahead of the field. It will take the commies another 30 years before they can make something to even challenge it. |

We don't take prototype test airplanes and haphazardly dogfight them with whatever retired general wanders around. The "cocky young combat pilot" testing an F-22 would be a very experienced Major or LtCol, with a lot of hours and quals, not some wet behind the ears young punk. In fact we just graduated the very first class of initial entry F-22 pilots less than a year ago. The F-22 had a 144-0 kill ratio in Northern Edge 06, I find it hard to believe that all those badass combat hardened F/A-18, F-15, and F-16 pilots couldn't kill a single Raptor. |
