I just got mine.   AND..  A brand new Nikon CoolPix 5000 !  

(camera given to me by my wife as an early Christmas present)

I still haven't read the manuals yet and it's way more complex than my Nikon CoolPix 950, so please forgive the color balance issues:

I LOVE the 5000 !!!!

I started off with a Nikon CoolPix 950 and used it religiously for about 2 years.
I was very satisfied with the picture quality and the overall ease of use.

The 5000 ROCKS!  The pics are definitely better than the 950 and the features are unbelievable.

I have always owned Nikon cameras and their digital cams are just as great as their conventional film cameras.  (I have an F, F1, N8008 --  soon to all be retired to my friends -- I am going totally digital !!)

It's not really too expensive:  
($1095 for the camera / $79 for second lithium ion battery and charger kit / $615 for 3 of the 256mb compact flash memory cards)


I have just started playing, but here are some of the cool features:


- much more ergonomic design than prior Nikon models

- comes with stand-alone rapid battery charger and 1 lithium ion battery (2 hours to charge - operates camera for 100 minutes on a charge)

- uses 2cr5 conventional battery as well.
(in case you are away from AC power -- just carry a few of these disposable batteries)

- takes INCREDIBLE pics.  5 megapixel
(each "fine" setting photo is 1.5-2.0mb)

- built-in microphone and speaker (for "movies")

- can take a 1 minute quicktime movie !
(pretty cool)

- lcd display panel articulates to almost any position.  (even can face forward so the subject can see the image as they are being photographed)

- individual user settings -->  You can totally configure all settings-- and there are MANY settings! -- and save them in their "profile" (holds 2 user profiles in non-volatile memory)

- hotshoe attachment for any of the Nikon Speedlights.

- built-in flash w/ red-eye reduction.
(works differently than the other coolpix cams -- it pulses the strobe at a low level before firing)



The only problem with it is that it is very hard to find !  (and the fact that you actually have to read the manual to figure out all of the manual settings!  -- but it does work quite well as a "point and shoot" when set on auto)

Mine say's "MIL" just like Duffy's, are the OD's different than the LEO blues?

LEO blue = SRT
OD green = MIL

The Blue and the OD are actually two different model numbers, the M16-14LE and M16-14M.

So the OD ones will say MIL, and the blue ones will say SRT.. Even though I haven't figured out what that stands for yet.
