I'll always remember the catchy tune "the crack of doom, the mountain of fire" song.  I haven't seen the LOTR movie yet so I'll have to refrain from reading any of the negative posts.  Tolkien were the first fantasy books I read in 6th grade and haven't stopped since.

I think I still have the LP.

"Fifteen birds,
in five fir trees,
their feathers were burned,
in a firey breeze.

What funny little birds,
they had no wings,
oh what shall we do,
with the funny little things?"

I'm just all a quiver over the movie...somebody pinch me!

In junior high and Highschool we watched that "cartoon" every year. Much better than the live action film.

OH MY GOD!!
I haven't seen The Hobbit for years, but that song always pops up in my head once in awhile. I end up singing it softly to myself.
I never really knew all the words.

Yep...It is a good one.  Far superior to the Lord of the Rings animation that totally blew.  Not to mention it left out over 500 pages of the story?!?

yes people, this is the second time LOTR has been adapted(poorly) into a movie...

Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
Let others follow it who can!
Let them a journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet.

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the moon, East of the sun.

John Houston will always be the voice of Gandalf for me.

There is probably a reason why they filmed LOTR first instead of the Hobbit.  Hobbit really WAS a childrens story, and as such it would be hard to beat the 1977 cartoon.

I have The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and Return of the King all on video tape.  I liked the animated LTR movie, but the Return of the King Sucked.  How can you edit a story down to the most important parts and still make it boring?  I think it was made for tv like The Hobbit was.  Same animation and voice actors at least.  I did like the animated Hobbit though.  I think you can still get all three at costco for pretty cheap.

Hee hee.

I remember the Return of the King cartoon.

We used to
find the spot toward the end
when Gandalf is running his hand through his beard.

Hit FFWD.

Die laughing.

Hmmm, we watched the Hobbit every year in school as well, good times...

One year we watched all of the animated LOTR movies as well, I think they were done by Ralph Bakshi?  They had the nifty live action horse rider sillouhette thing IIRC.

I have all three on VHS: The Hobbit, LOTR, and The Return of the King. Haven't even watched them, just part of my collection. I think they are out on dvd now.

I always considered the songs the worst part of the books.
Those Rivendell elves would have driven me mad.
