Standby is also a possiblity if the flight doesn't look like it will fill up. |

I agree on calling the airlines. They can be very reasonable. When my dad passed, American gave me a good price and left the return time open.

United has a flight on Kayak.com leaving on the 22nd and returning on the 29th for $349. Flights will generally be cheaper witha Saturday night stay.

About a year ago, I called around trying to get bereavement fares. A few airlines had some bereavement discounts, but I found that the best deal was regular fare on AirTran. |
