OK - this is where your thinking is just WRONG. Ironically - its the same mistake the people who study climate also made when they rung the bell about global warming.
First off - we could all be in a ball of ice in mid august, it doesn't mean shit unless its like that in the next several years before and after as well. One hot or cold summer does not a trend make!
The problem with the study of climate is that there is a fair amount of variation from year to year. Climate change generally happens over a long period of time. Small shifts will still take a decade or so to actualize. We do not have reliable data about temperatures etc past a few hundred years. The world is over four BILLION years old. Man has been around for over 250,000 years (give or take, not counting our related cousins). Life really explode around 500 MILLION years ago. Since then we have gone through mass extinctions that nearly wiped out all life on earth and giant shifts in climate.
Fun Facts:
Everything North of Nebraska was under a MILE of ice 11,000 years ago.
The Sahara was not nearly as large around 9000 years ago - much of it was jungle and savanna! They find rock carvings under the sand of giraffes and hippos, etc.
All of these changes took place before man every pumped the first drop of oil out of the earth. Get ready - in 10000-15000 years from now, the next ice age will hit and canada will again be under a MILE OF ICE.
Now - the crux of the problem is this. We take our limited data, add in info about how much CO2 was in the air by sampling ice in the antarctic which has trapped air bubbles in it, and add in the stuff we are pumping into the air, and throw all that shit into a big computer.
Now that computer hums along and spits out a doomsday scenario. I think anyone would be alarmed at this and look at it more. The problem is, with these complex models we really have little way of knowing how accurate they are. In the 70s we thought we would enter another ice age to soon!
Climatology is VERY complex and not fully understood. Mother Earth is a lot tougher than anyone realizes. She will be around long after we are gone. Life will go on with or with out us.
I don't blame some of the initial alarms - but I don't think they are being honest with the data and the whole issue has become politicized. Some people simply bang the gong to get more funding money.
Personally I think we should work towards cleaner fuels and processes - but the US and Europe will be doing that any way. Its China and India who have no regard of their own and are much worse polluters. That is why we don't join the BULLSHIT Kyoto treaty. It puts limits on the US and UK, but lets China do what they want because they are still catching up. haha - not thanks, comrade!
