I know there are quite a few high speed internet users on this board.  I was just made aware of the situation yesterday but Excite, the provider of @Home high speed cable internet has filled for bankruptcy.  They went to court to cut off internet service.

Today the court ruled that Excite can cut off their internet cable services at any time.  Hopefully this doesn't happen, as I don't have a standard phone line anymore, I use my cell phone for everything.

Dial up is taking a hit too! Net Zero just cancelled my Platinum service. I automatically go back to the ten hour freebie on 12/30/01

I have comcast at home also.  We should see what happens in the next 20 minutes.  It was nice of them to send a letter telling me they wouldn't charge me for days I could use my connection, how thoughtful.

I use AT&T broadband. Unfortunately, AT&T uses @homes network. I'm scared.

Dialup would suck to have to go back to, even for a short period of time!!

I cant spell worth a shit.

As much as you hate them, there is always AOL.  I have Time Warner's Road Runner service.  As far as I know, there's nothing to worry about... yet.

I was on Charter@Home but  I just switched to Charter Pipeline. I'm just glad Charter had the ability to take over.

Yeah I use @home too.. I heard this around 9:30 PM today(Well actually its 12:30 AM on Saturday now so it was Friday).  Anyways we called ATT service and the guy told me he found out on the internet and ATT weren't telling there employees anything about it.  I think www.yahoo.com has a story about it on the front page in the news headlines.  Comcast can shutdown at 0300 Saturday morning.

I had already switched my settings over to accomodate Charter Pipeline and this morning I could not connect. I called my brother and he said that I needed to go to the router setup and then release end then renew the DHCP. Now it works!

Well I am still up and running. So far so good. I have COX@Home in the Phoenix metro area.

I was down this morning, but I called and they said that it wasn't from the @Home issues. Something screwed up and it was effecting all of the metro area.

But all is good now... till later

raf, thank you.  After reading about you downloading NetZero, I also did so last night.  This morning I woke up without @Home, but got up and running on NetZero fairly quickly.

I think that Covad is going to be my long-term solution:  http://www.covad.com/order/home.shtml

ColKlink, what free dialup are you using?  NetZero is way heavy on the ads.

Yep had ATT athome. Went down this morning but their support said it was a local outage. Some A..hole by the name of Steve number 4007 said it was not related to the bancruptcy. Lying s.o.b... On my company dial up for now. Looking for other means. I guess 865,000 subscribers at 50.00 dollars a month don't mean nothing to these business types...

I got that recorded message on the phone this morning. What a bummer! Now I'm back to running on the 56k dial-up (which never connects faster than 30k). Man, I was spoiled. This totally sucks.

ColonelKlink,
I did listen to their message, but ATT is a major stock holder of Excite and had a major of the board so how did only ATT get cut off. Also since they new this was coming, I have been receiving emails and snail mails about it for weeks. WHen the cut off came they should have been able to just bring up their own routers server and such with very little disruption. It shouldn't take thsi 7 to 14 days that their people are telling me. And to looses my email address, now AI will have to go to the list servers I subscrib to and get re-subscribed for all them. This is just business to them but they forget about their customers. I have att digital cable, internet access and long distance. They get enough of my money but their service stinks!.

I was on ATT@Home. After losing service for 24 hours, we made the transition to ATT Broadband this morning.  Pretty smooth actually, but we'll have a learning curve with the various settings and other technical stuff of course.

I lost service yesterday at my house, but it still works at my job.

Now I gotta use free dial up crap until they get it fixed.

I HATE dial up! It's slooooooow.

Being on dialup again sucks.  I went to Fry's this morning and got a new modem.  My old 56k modem would only connect at 28k or 31k.  The new one gets a 52k connection and is almost tolerable.

The incompetents at @Home should be beaten with a stick.  I am tempted to go back to DSL.

I have Cox @ Home, here in Pensacola.

I hope, because they use @Home for Residential that they will flip us over onto some of their Business bandwidth. If they don't, they will get sued by alot of people who paid their cable bill for this month on Friday. If they shut off service, I will definitely hock their modem and they'll have to sue me to get the money. I have already paid in 4 months towards buying the modem. I can use up to 6 monthss rent towards buying it outright.

I'm hoping since they have other providers that it won't be a problem. Same goes for AT&T who has many miles of backbone at its disposal. They will simply need to trunk the @Home connection into their Business Router/Switch.

That was my problem until they replaced the underground line from the pole to the house because of water leakage. Then I started getting 50+ Maybe you need to have a weed whacker "accident" out by the pole!

The whole problem stems from the revenue sharing aspect.  Comcast charges $39.99 if you have their cable.  Of that they were paying at home $12.  I want to know where the rest of the money is going considering how shitty their service is.  They agreed to a price hike and now give them $20.  Thats still $19.99 for their shitty, snot nosed customer service. At home supposedly is losing 6 mil a week.  The threat of a shut-down is a ploy to drive up the price of the company.  ATT and a group led by Comcast are trying to buy out AT HOME.  If AT HOME shuts down, they wont be worth anything. I would not worry.  They are shutting some service to scare the big companies to pony up more money.  The AT HOME bond holders have alot to lose.

I don't think COX is going to get sued because their service provider has filed Chapter11 and is no longer able to provide serivce people have prepaid for. Don't you think any prepaid prorated funds will be credited to your other COX service bills? Kinda like someone someone trying to sue Jiffy Lube because penzoil did not deliver their oil? I love how fast people in this country like to sue. I think of it like this the media has let us know the scoop now we must make our own decisions.
Remember @HOME is @Excite,  different companies resell their service and rename it.
It is Excite to blame not COX, ATT, etc.
