This goes with the pushup thread.  Again, ages 15-65.  I'd bet fewer could do the pull ups than could do the pushups.

much less than can do 20 pushups.

15%

I can squeeze out 10 on a good day but they are bouncers.

I'm in shape and I can barely do 10.

[edit to add: and they ain't dead hang pullups either]

I'm thinking 2-4% maybe.

I couldn't.  Not sure why, but I have never been able to do pull-ups.  I wish I were able to.

When I was a kid, I was small and slightly underweight.  Still couldn't do them.

You can be a fat slob but strong and easily do the 20 push ups in your other thread.

However, if your 20 or 40 pounds over weight, or even a big bodied weight trainer, it's going to take a lot of strength to do 10 good pull ups.

I think 60% of men could do the push ups, but I bet maybe 5% could do the pull ups.

Pull ups or chin ups? True dead hang pull ups I'd say less than 10% Maybe even less than 5%.

True dead hang pullups?  Ten?

<5%

Regarding the 20 pushups, I'd say that's closer to 30-40%.

Within 30 seconds!

ETAA:  I remember when the USMC changed their PFT standards to true dead hang pullups, no longer allowing "kipping" or any kind of squirming or momentum building during a pullup.    IIRC, about 20% of the male Marines at the time could get more than 10 true dead hang pullups.  It took a while for Marines to get used to the new standard.

Are we talking full extension of the arms slow pullups with a wide overhand grip with thumbs over the top or are we talking any way you can pull your chin up over the bar 10 times?

I have always sucked big time at pull ups and I'll admit.

One for the Commandant!
One for the Corps!

You should lower the number to one.

I'm out of shape right now so I can't max 20 but I'm at 16-17 I'd guess.

Pullups aren't a good measure of strength.

I remember the skinniest kid in junior high could do pull ups all day as he weighed nothing, while a very large football player in the same class, who always picked on the poor kid, and could beat him senseless,  could barely do five.

I agree that they're not necessarily a good measure of absolute strength, but they're an excellent measure of fitness and strength relative to weight.

Still can't do 10, and I'm not in bad shape

They are a good measure of upper body strength to weight though.. but not the be-all end-all of fitness evaluations, and overrated (MC PFT).

I'm 42 and weigh about 40 pounds more than I did in HS (now 6'3", 200lbs) and can only do about 7 good pull ups. They are tough. Losing about 20 pounds would help.

Even when I was playing football and in the best shape of my life I could only do about 10.  I could knock out 70-80 pushups but I've always sucked at pullups.

If you ever go to the gym, the piece of equipment that is used less than the squat rack is the chin up bar.  I do them, because they are probably the best upper body exercise you can do.  I would say less than 2% of all the males in this country can do 10 pullups.  There are a lot of strong people out there that could, but with anything, you have to practice.

ETA:

On my birthday last month, I did 19.  The last one sucked, but I got my chin over the bar.  I turned 53.

not very many, most of the times the guys you see in the gym get up there and are swinging and bouncing and afterwards think they just did 15 pull ups. In reality they could maybe do 5 real dead hang pull ups.

I think if one is able to do 30 proper pushups and 10 proper pullups that person is in pretty good shape upper-body-wise.

The other night I did 15 dead hang pull-ups.  I was also able to do sets of 2-3 reps with a 65lb dumbell strapped on.

I'm trying to get back up to 20 dead hang pull-ups and then on to 25...

No joke!  I could kip out 20 without breaking a sweat.   I could only do 7 dead hang when CMC made the announcement.  I worked HARD to get up to 10 by the first PFT that required dead hangs.  My max was 14.

Today I'd struggle to get 3.

But beating up skinny kids is a good measure of strength?

Anyhow, I can do about 13-14 right now, full extension down, full chin up over the bar pull ups.  When I was in HS I could do 20.

after everything else on my workout day (rippetoes, workout A days) I still can do 14, then 9, then 8, then 7 on 2 minute intervals.

these are palms facing me, to hit biceps, and the last rep is usually just my chin getting above the bar.

I'm 40 and can still do more than that. I used to do a LOT of pull-ups. I also did those things called "dips" on those bicycle handlebar thingies. Used to be able to do sets of 100.

Recon/Force Recon required our pullups be dead hangs so it was never an issue. Sure did weed out a ton of people though.

Not total strength, but they are an excellent measure of overall fitness (part of overall fitness).

Anyways, less than 5% I'd say. Even a small percent can even do one pullup, kipping or deadhang.

I can do 28 kipping and around 23 or so dead hangs.

beating the snot out of someone isnt a measure of strength either.  There are skinny kids who cant do 5 pull ups either, and big guys who can do 20, so this statement doesnt hold water.

True!! did I also mention all my friends father's are pretty much deceased. All keeled over at around 55 or so. My dad still going strong except for his chronic arthritis. I actually just went through a pretty good med work-up and was given the all clear. Doctor's only complaint was that I need more body fat!!  There are people who can process shit food and be OK others can't. My only problem is I like to cook french style cuisine. Overall I believe I eat healthier than most Americans, but I can't pass up a good burger...

Actually, I RARELY eat like that anymore. In fact, I went in there for a couple of light chicken wraps. But it's been so long since I had a "nasty burger" that I just had to treat myself. On the occasions that I do that, my body rejects it because it's used to eating healthier now. So I'll be feeling like crap for the rest of the day. But I have to fall off the wagon once in a while to remind myself why I don't eat like that any more. That... and I like fitting into my smaller-waist jeans.
