One of my former roommates (Wes) has a brother that is about to graduate from OCS and go into surface  warfare (ships).  

Wes asked me what would be some good books that go into strategy and logistics.

I came up with Red Storm Rising and The Art of War.

Any suggestions?   I want his brother to have some good books to read...so hopefully he can have a larger knowledge base when the day comes that he has tough decisions to make and lives are on the line.

Moving Mountains - Written by Gen William Pagonis, who was Logistics Chief for ODS, gives a good picture of logistics in a modern pick up war.


Jihad: The Trail of Political Islam by Gilles Kepel and Anthony F. Roberts(NOT Jihad - The Rise of Militant Islam in Central Asia)  the book was/is a textbook at the Naval Postgraduate school.  A good book that traces the rise and fall of political Islam, goes back to the days of the Ottoman Empire, the collapse of the Empire, the Moslem Brotherhood and the collapse in the 20th century resulting in terrorism being the only political weapon left available to the fundamentalists.

Samuel Eliot Morrison - WW2 Navy history books

I would expect that there are some books on chinese expansionism.

OCS - should have a good list of directly related professional books.

Chapman's, Duttons, etc

Not strictly strategy, but the book Castles of Steel by Robert K Massie is a must have for ever Navy man. An awesome chronicle of WW1 at sea.
