Well i'm sitting here at the Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, KY.  I flew in from Atlanta, GA this morning.  My father is having a total hip replacement.

It came about due to him having a disease called AVN.  About AVN Disease

Currently my mother is in Hawaii on vacation.  She knew he would be having surgery, but as far as she knows he's having it when she returns from Hawaii.

He did not tell her he was having it done in order to keep her from worrying while she is on holiday.  Needless to say... even if he survives the hip surgery, he's still a dead man when she finds out.  So am I, since I didn't inform her either.

I'm observing the surgery, but my father said I wasn't allowed to take pictures and post them on the internet.  LOL  I asked, trust me.

From what i've been told, the surgery only lasts about an hour, and recovery room time is 1-2 hours in length.  They said he would be up and walking in no time and back to normal in less than a month.  Modern medicine and technology is amazing.

Wish him luck guys.

The hospital internet allows me to access ARFCOM but does not allow me to access porn.  Now what am I going to do for the next few hours?

The largest Bass Pro east of the Mississippi is only a short drive from the hospital.  Maybe I will go there.

Go to the Fraiser Arms Historical Musuem in downtown Louisville, or the Louisville slugger musuem also in downtown Louisville.  If theres any specific activity you enjoy tell me and I'll tell you where to find it in Louisville.

UPDATE:

My father is out of surgery.  Doctor said it went very well.  No hiccups.  Very little blood loss.  My father is now in recovery where he will spend the next two hours.  I won't see him until then.  I'll update again when I talk to him.

Hope things go as well post-op.  Keep an eye on him if there are not sufficient staff to do so - a stroke is a very real possibilty, but permanent injury can be greatly reduced if caught in time.

Update 2

In his own private room now.  I snuck in some cookies he loves.  Famous Amos.  He hadn't eaten since 1030 the night before so I don't believe the box is going to last long.    He was chowing down on them.  I'm just letting him rest, and not allowing hospital food near him.  He said he was in the mood for Subway tonight.  So Subway it is.

He says he's still pretty loopy because of all the drugs.  Doctors still say he should be up and about walking a bit tomorrow.  Update again later.

Good luck.  BTW - If you get a chance would you probe (ask) the doc about knee replacements?  Is it a good idea?  Have there been any great strides in that field of med in the last decade or so?  That kind of thing.  Thanks.

My mom had 2 titanium ones put in in 2005.  You won't regret them(well after you recover from the whole post-op pain and PT)

I spoke to the Doc.  Said he doesn't deal with knees.  Only hips.  He suggested talking to a specialist in that specific area.  Sorry he was no help.  I tried.

Forget my dad.  Worry about me.  She's going to kill me for not telling her.

Good luck to your Dad.

I had AVN and had to have my hips replaced. The first in 1999 when I was 31 and the second in 2001 on my 33rd birthday. He will be up and running (or walking) in no time.
