I was invited to a pow-wow.  Is there anything I should be aware of?

If somone offers you food, eat it.

Dont dance unless invited, unless the MC invites folks from the crowd to join in.  Usualy this is only on the Honor Vet's dance and only if your a vet.

Call in the cavalry.

Inform them of a war dance in progress.

Watch hilarity ensue.

Bring money, there will be lots of stuff for sale.  Just be respectful and you'll be fine, although I did go to an Apache one as a kid, and I swear they wanted to kill me, with their crazy eyes.

Bring lotsa wampum - usually lotsa stuff for sale.  Some of the pow-wow's I have been to are like large swap meets with some living history stuff folded in.  Others are more heritage oriented - you'll be able to judge whats going on.  Don't be afraid to ask questions - most everybody is ready to answer and help.

Take a genuine interest and it'll go good.

Another one I went to resembled more of a Grateful Dead backstage party than a pow-wow.  Lotsa funny smelling smoke and such......
Hopefully yours will be more of a family experience.

And yes, stay out of the dance unless invited - its just that non-dancers screw it up and ruin the flow of it.

Generally they are way cool - if you catch negative vibes from someone, just move on.  Never had a problem and saw some cool sights.

After being forced to attend one every year K through 10 I don't believe I'd attend another voluntarily.

is this a large pow-wow or smaller event? being held in a school auditorium.
the big ones have a large amount of vendors selling some ok, and some real interesting items.  if its a larger event go, bring cash and have fun. for a smaller event usually a donation (opagge) to gift (spck) is always appreciated.

if you ever get asked to support someone during sundance, consider it an honor.

I think it will be on the small side.  I'll still bring money.

Check with your host/ess and find out if photography is ok BEFORE you even bring your camera in. Lots of Native Americans don't like cameras, even if they don't hold to the old beliefs.

Yes, yes I have. It was probably the most positive experience I've had in the last few years.
