Well I finally decided to figure out what the hell newsgroups are all about.

From what I could find GrabIt was one of the easier newsreaders to use so that's what I'm set up on for now.

I'm currently dl'ing @ 700 kb/s, compared to a torrent of a similiar file @ 20 kbps.  I can definitely get used to this!

Now for the newfag qustions:

1) What's the best way to search for binaries?

  • GrabIt lets me search USENET 5 times a day for free (free is key), which should be more than ample.  One thing I'm worried about is lack of feedback.  How do I know if a file is good?

  • Browse headers?  This seems rather inefficient for most things, unless someone can hook me up with good newsgroups for game iso's, music, pc apps, etc.

  • Are NZB search sites more effective?  Mininova's usenet search seemed pretty lame compared to their torrent search, which I consider the best format.  What's a good one?

2) Should I replace GrabIt?

  • From what I've read GrabIt has no multiserver support, is that reason enough to ditch it?

  • For what?  I want to stick with free for now.

  • I can get around in mIRC so I'm not computer illiterate but simpler is definitely better.
  •

Thanks-

I've been pretty happy with Grabit but insight cable seems to have a 3-gig per month limit on usenet. Check your ISP before getting all excited about how much you're going to DL.

I'm on comcast, which apparently has a 2gb/month limit.  Crappy.
