A Grand Island police officer was injured Tuesday afternoon during department firearms training.

According to Grand Island Police Chief Steve Lamken it happened around 4:00p.m. Tuesday.

GIPD was finishing up training out at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center.

One officer was preparing to clean his gun when it discharged, and ricocheted off a counter top.

It then struck another officer in the chest area.

That officer was not wearing a vest, which isn't required for training under department policy.

He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, treated and released.

Lamken says the bullet did not enter the officer's body, and both officers are doing fine.

They will have the option to take a leave of absence, but it is not mandatory.

GIPD will look into the incident and training policies to see if changes need to be made.

The names of the officers involved have not been released.
