I am curious what everybody else does with their ammo stashes... I like to keep my ammo in the factory boxes as it provides lot info and it is also easier to grab a box or two to use as opposed to having to take the ammo can to the range.
Still, I know I can get about 1400-rounds of WWB 9mm in a ammo can when I leave it in the box to about 2500, rounds if the ammo was loose. This past weekend I got tired of having three cans full of CCI Standard velocity in those space intensive plastic boxes so I dumped the rounds out into a 50-cal can. The can is nice and full and I figure it held about 4500-rds of 22LR ammo. The nice thing with that it that it was all from one case so the lot numbers were all the same. My 5.56 ammo I normally pull out of the boxes and put them on stripper clips as stripper clips stack quite well in a 50-cal can (you can fit about 3000-rds from my estimates in a 50-cal can if they are in stripper clips). My 9mm I still have in the white boxes... My 7,62x39 and 5,45x39 is in the original boxes as well... all stacked in ammo cans. Oh Yea, I do have an adequate supply of loaded mags to last for at least the start of a small war. So, what do the rest of you do? Do you keep it in the box or dump it out? Just curious... The ammo stash is starting to take up too much space  |

Empty the boxes into the cans. Saves a lot of room.
Pistol ammo I do leave in boxes though. Its much more compact than boxed rifle rounds. |

I keep mine in the boxes.
It might not save space, but a full can of un-boxed .223 is fucking heavy. |

Except for reloads I keep mine boxed, makes it easier to grab an exact amount of ammo to head to the range, also makes it much easier to inventory.

I always leave it in the boxes.
If I ever have to sell it, no one will want to buy it loose. You never know. |

Leave in boxes. I just buy more ammo cans to put it in if I run out of room. Plus STACKS of ammo cans in my closet looks cool!!!!!!!! I don't care if I'm not using the room effieciently!!!!!!
And if I wanna sell it you gotta have it in the boxes. |

In boxes. I do take South African 7.62 out of the battle packs and store the boxes in 50 cal cans. 560 to the can. I keep a couple of cans of 5.56 in bandoleers in cans. The rest (xm193) in boxes stored in ammo cans.
Would dumping .22 rimfire into ammo cans ding up or deform the bullets? Seems like the ones on the bottom might get mashed up. Never tried that. I buy by the brick and have a few in the ammo locker at home. |

well, I guess I'm the only one that has dumped them into 30 cal cans.
Grouped them by maker, brass/steel, caliber. Still haven't finished labeling all cans. Have about 10 30 cal cans full now each with a different caliber and usually only brass or only steel. |

Not that I have noticed... I don't dump all my 22ammo as a standard brick is about as compact as ammo can get (except for issues stacking the bricks into a can). I did this originally as I had tow boxes of the Federal Bulk that the boxes got crushed in my range bag. I liked it that way so much, I decided to do it with the CCI stuff as I was able to consolidate three full ammo cans into a single "not quite full" can. I started this as I am tempted to do the same with my 115-gr WWB ammo but I think I will not go for it (at least not at this time). |

Why would it be a big deal if a primer detonated? The bullet is not in a gun. Nothing would happen. |

Only a box or two, for a range trip? Just playing with you.  I have ammo stored both ways. Still in the box and in ammo cans for long term storage. Loose ( or on stripper clips) in the ammo cans for range trips. So much easier for grabing some rounds for reloading Da Mags and I grab a lot when shooting. I shoot in the 100's of rounds, so this works well for me. Oh and about the loose rimfire rounds. the factory boxes I get them in ARE packed Loose in the box. I see no problem with loose rimfire in ammo cans. YMMV |

My only loose ammo is 9mm and 45acp reloads I buy at the fun show.
When I go to the range I take a 50 cal can of whatever I'm shooting and pull boxes from it as needed. |

I generally tended to empty the boxes into cans until I discovered that it is easier to keep track of how many rounds you have if you leave them in the boxes.

Every which kind of way.
Loose, boxed, loaded in mags, stripper clips.Sometimes I put a few boxes of 9 or shotgun shells in a can of 5.56. |

 (Just razzin' y'all) I keep my handgun ammo loose in the 50 cal cans because it saves space! I keep my rifle ammo in their boxes/cases. Once I open a case for use, I'll open ALL OF IT into a 50 cal can loose. Otherwise it's stored in its wood/cardboard case. As for 22 LR. I go through it so fast I never thought of just putting it all into one can... I usually shoot different types though, so I'd have to keep some of them separate in boxes though. |

I actually took bags and bagged up my 223 ammo. 30 rounds a bag. Then tossed them in the ammo can.
For my pistol ammo, I dumped a few boxes in, but have 2 cases still in boxes. I'll probably empty them out come next shooting class. |

All SHTF ammo is on strippers and in bandoleers, plus packed away in cans. All shooting ammo is stored loose in cans w/ dessicant.

Easy to sort by brand and grab just the right amount before heading to the range. Also there may be a bit of OCD.... |

I dump mine....I can cut the portion of the box with the ammo/lot info on it and throw it in the can if it is a concern.
I hate emptying boxes and the less trash I have to deal with at the range the better. I have all my .44 mag reloaded, so that is the exception. i keep the boxes to put brass in.. |

I have it loose in cans. When I go shoot, I take the whole can. Plus, I don't have to clean up a mess of little cardboard boxes at the range.

If you ditch the plastic tray from a CCI box of 50 9mm, you can put 100 loose rounds in one box. That's about the only factory ammo I buy, so I can't say how it would work for other brands/calibers.
