I heard a rumour regarding Ebay is going to stop permitting weapon related items to be sold on their website.  I wrote Ebay in regards to this and they confirmed it with the following email. I then replied expressing my disapproval of this decision and in turned cancel my account. If any of you feel the same let Ebay hear from you. I understand they have the right to do what they want but I have the right to tell them I dont like it.

Copy of Ebays letter:

Dear Sir,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to closing your account.

We're sorry to hear that you'd like to close your eBay account as a
result of our recent changes to the Firearms policy.

Please note that the changes to the Firearms policy have come after
careful review of our existing policy. Although we value our open and
honest environment, some items that can legally be sold may not be safe
for our marketplace. Many of our policies go beyond what the law
requires to ensure the safety of our eBay members and the community.

As you are a valued member of our community, we sincerely hope that you
will consider continuing to use eBay for your online trading needs.
However, if you still wish to close your account, to have your request
processed as quickly as possible, please go to:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/account/closing-account.html

Follow the directions you find there.

It is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for choosing eBay.

Sincerely,
Sharon C.

Hell, they probably do.

In my response letter I asked them. If your stopping weapons related sales was due to your concern for the public safety, then lets review of areas of concern like cars and motorcycles. I said with statics provided that over 41816 prople were killed in motor vehicle accident last year (More then firearm related incidents) so why is Ebay not stopping the sales of vehicles out of concern for my safety! They have yet to respond to that...I dont plan on holding my breath.

I don't much care if ebay wants to sell gun stuff or not.  It's their pergative IMHO.  Ebay is a window of opportunity for people to sell there stuff online easily.  Ebay can regulate anything they want that goes through it because it's their website.  I don't make people see the way I see, that's the governments job.    I respect individuals opinions just as I like people to respect mine.  If someone doesn't want you to walk in their house with shoes on because they find it disrespectful, then you take your shoes off.  If someone comes into my house, I'd like them to keep their shoes on, cause God only knows what they might step on, and I don't want to have to pay a doctor bill.

If you really wanna do something positive, create a site like ebay and allow people to trade what you want them to trade.  Closing your account does nothing to their business.  They gained 10 new accounts as you were closing yours.  If you create a site that sells what ebay won't, you can take business that could be theirs and make a killing.

Just my opinion of course, I'm keeping my ebay account.

I am fully aware that closing my account wont hurt Ebay. I just choose not to use a site that promotes this kind of political B.S. by saying they are trying to protect me. As I said in my FIRST message, ebay has a right to do what they want, I also have the right not to use their services because I dont care for their politics. Yes, I use gunbroker but it was nice to have other options sometimes. I have bought many things from Ebay and gunbroker, gunbroker will continue to get my support Ebay will not. I was not say everyone should close their Ebay account, you do as you see fit. But understand like Paypal, and Now Ebay, you are supporting a group who is not supporting you, there will be a day I'm afraid, that we will end up like Canada, Britian and Australia, and I do believe it will be because gun owners failed to stand up on the big issues and as well as the small. We will lose our gun rights not because the Anti Gun advocates will take them from us, No! it will be because we will give it to them. You can look at this as not big deal if you wish, and in and of itself it probably isnt, however it is a part of a much larger and continuing anti gun program throughout this nation, and you have to start fighting back somewhere, and you have to fight the little battles as well as the big ones. Thats my opinion.

I believe that it would make a big difference if even 20% of their trade came thru firearms and firearm related items. There must not be that much trade of firearm related items, not enough to make a difference.

But the choice is their's to make....nice that they enjoy the freedom of choice.
I wonder if they even give thought as to how they came about having the freedom to do what they want.

I have an Ebay account and have had for years...but after their announcement awhile back about firearm policies I haven't bought much from them. I have even paid more else where for similar items that I could of bought cheaper off of Ebay. For now I will keep my account until something better comes along...but I have voiced my opinion to them (Ebay and PayPal) of their anti-firearm policy.

There has to be a way around Ebay's policy. What if sellers auctioned off coupons? For example a coupon good for a magazine, a Glock an AR15 etc. Coupon has to be redeemed at XYZ Sporting Goods. You can't even have a photo of a prohibited item in the auction so no pics, just a description, model # maybe a link to a webpage where potential bidder can look up the item info.

Nothing in their firearm policy prohibits doing that.
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/firearms-weapons-knives.html

I don't see any problems in their coupon policy. http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/manufacturers-coupons.html

Gift Card policy
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/gift.html

XYZ Sporting goods could provide a phone # for verification of the coupon. Of course all laws would have to be followed etc etc.

While the idea may not fly and Ebay would have to make yet another new policy, I think it would be more entertaining to find a loophole or a way to beat them at their own game. A few hundred closed accounts won't make a drop in the bucket to them but a few hundred people exploting a loophole or a new method of attack will raise the brow of hundreds more.
