No dsl but I'm about to get wireless..5 Mb download.Not as fast as my sisters cable but when you live in a rural area.

I've had DSL for about a year now . I think I would have serious withdrawl if I had to go back to a standard phone line .

Pray that you never have to go back.

When we were living in Sarasota Fl we were one of the first comunities to get cable modems through @Home internet access. It was paradise!!!

We then moved to Orlando and only had dial up avaliable as the complex we live in had some wierd arangement for cable that prevented internet acess and no DSL, but the phone co (Bellsouth) swore that they would have DSL in our area by the beginning of 2000. Its now the end of 2001 and they just got our area wired for DSL. IT HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE!!!!![BD][>Q]

Hopefully by the middle of next month we'll be hooked to DSL and my dial up hell will end [}:D]

I've had DSL over a year now. 600kbps. My dialup was a StarWars like 36.6kbps! Dialups suck and blow...!

I have had Bellsouth DSL for over a year now. It is actually faster (for downloads) than the T1 that I had at work. The T1 is like cable, in that as more users share the bandwidth, performance drops. Of course, the company was too cheap to increase to another T1 to compensate. Porn downloads in a snap!! If it is slow, I know it is the site rather that my connection...

I can't get any type of highspeed at home, have my dialup tweaked to get about 7k/sec d/l but its still very painfull[>Q]. Especially after leaving work where we have a T3 to our main router which has 2 OC3 backbones this i can get an average of 2meg/sec d/l I have peaked it at 4.5meg/sec.. so my burner made a new home at work [8D]

sDSL operating near T1 speeds.

Think I got spoiled working at an ISP with 3 T3's. (Think it went up to 5 or more right before I left there).

After my phone company promised the ability to get DSL for over a year and then withdrew at the last minute,,, and still can't get it after an additional six months, I got Roadrunner Cable Modem. It is a little cheaper and symetrical. For now it is damn fast and works well.

I'll keep it till it slows down. Then I'll switch over to DSL if available.

I had DSL starting FOUR YEARS AGO. Began with 384 up/down, the the whole net was upgraded to 1.2Mbps down/256 up. It is wonderful stuff.

I just got cable modem last week and love it. It would be hard to go back to dialup now. I waited for DSL to come to my area (Austin) for well over a year and finally gave up. Plus I have heard too many horror stories about SWBell and DSL to be much interested any more. My fiancée ordered DSL, they eventually told her she couldn't get it, but they put it on her bill every month anyway. I had a friend in Richardson (Dallas area, telecom corridor) who couldn't get DSL. If SWBell can't supply DSL to the Dallas and Austin metro areas, where can they do it? Much as I hate to be sending money to Time Warner, at least their service is reliable and hassle-free compared to SWBell DSL.

I had SDSL (768k/768k) for about a year, then Northpoint went out of business. That was great stuff.

Now I have ADSL with 768k down, and 128k up. Certainly better than dial-up.

That's pretty sad. If their countries had as much freedom as ours, it would be almost 0%. If those countries had more freedom, they all would probably have DSL.

Satellite internet is quite expensive for the 2-way, and lag (latency) is quite bad still. IIRC the setup costs were close to $800 and the monthly fee was $80.

I looked into it briefly after moving away from Roadrunner availability. I now connect from home with a 300 baud acoustic coupler from my Commodore 64 (At least that's what it feels like)

don't have DSL... But I've got a [b]T-1[/b] line here at work... Gotta watch the porn links, they may be watching?

Have a dial-up at home, don't use it because it's too slow.

We are getting a new server at work in 2 months... The IS guy is my buddy and I will be the ass't IS guy. (Network administrator, is that a hard job?)

Salt Lake City was one of the first communities in the nation to get DSL. I have had it now for about 4 years and can't imagine using a dialup ever again. I also work for the ISP I use (XMission) and we have a DS3 (45MB) connection for our office LAN. It's like crack. [:)] Usually, the speed at work is limited to the sites I am downloading from but there have been times I have exceeded my hard drive's ability to write.

I exist in an almost exclusively Linux/Unix world even at home but on the occasions that I do boot into Windows at home, I use either Zone Lab's Zone Alarm or Tiny's Tiny Personal Firewall. You might want to check out [url]www.grc.com[/url] which allows you to test your firewall and also gives nice reviews of different personal firewalls.

Working for an ISP in Utah, I personally see our staff members roll their eyes every time someone calls or email a complaint about "scans" they receive while using BlackICE. I sometimes think some companies feel unless they are constantly notifying you that they are stopping evil from entering your computer, you may think they are not working properly.

I wish that I had high speed. The verizon company sent me all the equipment, in a kit to go to DSL and they never fixed the phine line so it never worked! I hooked all the lines up and had to take it out and send it back. I was very pissed off about that. Luckily my sister has a cable modem, so if there is any big file download needed, she will do it for me. My 56k modem is pretty fast, I always get high connections at or near 50,667bps, reliably. Since I am not addicted to porn it gets the job done for now.
