Typical of L.A. Times(aka Pravda West), they have pro-gun piece, and to "balance" the new reporting has anti piece.

Gun Control Law Helped Cut Crime, Study Says
Research: UC Davis looked at criminal records of gun offenders who tried
to purchase firearms.

By SHARON BERNSTEIN, Times Health Writer

California's gun control law appears to have had a moderate impact on
reducing additional violent crimes by people convicted of gun-related
offenses, public health researchers at UC Davis reported in a new study.
The researchers examined the criminal records of 1,654 people who had
been convicted of gun-related misdemeanors and subsequently tried to buy
handguns in California between 1989 and 1993. That time period allowed a
comparison of criminal activity before and after a 1992 law that forbade
firearm sales to those convicted of gun-related crimes.
Those who purchased guns before the law took effect were 29% more
likely to commit violent or gun-related crimes than those who came along a
few years later and were denied such purchases.
The findings, to be published today in the Journal of the American
Medical Assn., do not show that gun violence was eliminated or even
dramatically reduced by the handgun law, said the study's chief author,
Garen J. Wintemute. But they do indicate that the law has had an effect,
said Wintemute, an emergency room doctor and public health researcher who
heads the university's Violence Prevention Research Program.
The next step, he said, would be to combine the handgun law with
other social programs aimed at reducing violence.
"It's going to take more than any one single program to prevent all
violent crime," Wintemute said.
Thomas B. Cole, a physician who writes about public health issues for
the medical journal, compared gun violence with other injury-related
public health problems, such as motor vehicle crashes. No single program
has been responsible for the enormous decline in traffic fatalities in the
last few decades, but, taken together, vehicle safety standards, seat
belts, speed enforcement and drunk driving laws have had a significant
effect.
The study comes as several states consider expanding their handgun
laws. At the same time, some gun control advocates fear that President
Bush, who as governor of Texas supported and signed a law expanding the
right to carry concealed weapons there, will attempt to discourage gun
control legislation.
"We have on hand the evidence we need to broaden the prohibition on
gun purchases [by violent criminals]," Wintemute said.

File this story under the category "No Brainer."

OF COURSE keeping firearms out of the hands of violent, unrepentant criminals is a good idea. Did we need a study to determine that???

What we DON'T need is more gun control laws. We ALREADY have laws that say a convicted felon can't own a gun. ENFORCE THE LAWS WE HAVE, GENIUSES.

Of course, they try to tie GWB's Texas concealed carry in, as if the Texas law says anyone can have a gun for any reason. The Texas concealed carry law includes a background check, state issued license, and training course.

So its a non-issue in this discussion. Of course, those inclined to commit crimes with a firearm aren't gonna apply for a Texas concealed carry license anyway.

I do get tired of saying the same things OVER AND OVER to these gun control types.

Hey Warlord, good to see you are on top of this.

ONe thing not mentioned in this "study" is the effect of the three strikes law in CA.  More parolees are moving out of the state than are moving in.

I guess he also forgot to run a comparison of the "shall issue" states vs. the may or never issue states.  He might be shocked to discover the crime rate is much lower in the right to carry states.  But this is also a guy who characterizes gun ownership as a disease.

Your plague-infested comrade,

Wintemute is an anti-gun weenie that admitted that he wanted to PROVE that guns were a public health problem to "children". So much for the scientific method.

He also ILLEGALLY obtained, with accomplices in the kalifornia doj, handgun ownership records- names, addresses, etc. for this "study". How do you like it that information which is only supposed to be available to law enforcement is now in the hands of some anti-gun organization?

The anti-gunners/HCI are coming out these co-ordinated pre-emp attacks such as this "study" to justify the passing of more restrictive guns that making its way through the Kalif. legislature at this moment as we are reading this.

Typical.  It worked a little bit, so if we take away a bunch more of the peoples rights we might have a real impact.

this article is junk science. about 96% of criminal acquire their weapons illegally. this only prove that the idiot criminals who try to procure arms from a liscensed dealer are less likely to commit violence. hell maybe some of them dont know they are criminals [:)] how about the crime rates before and after the restrictive gun laws? what else comes into facter here? does kali have anything similar to project exile?

A "public study from UC Davis" - yeah, riiiiight.

And if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a wagon.

Did UC Davis also do a study about population increases tied to energy comsumption and energy production?  Well run along then...

Hey why doesn't someone "publish" a study that says when citizens carry concealed weapons (and protect THEMSLEVES) crime goes down?  Oh, that's right, the liberal owners of the media outlets won't let us do that little feat.

Oh the humanity...
