At my company, United Way is the charity of choice.  As such, there is considerable pressure and incentive amongst management to encourage employees to give to this cause.  Being a company man, I'm happy to play ball and give money to a good cause, but I'm not certain if any of my donation is going to end up in causes to which I'm strongly opposed.  Is there a list, say at the NRA website or elsewhere, of organizations which have been identified as anti Bill of Rights (2nd amendment being the most important right now)?

For example, the YWCA is a sub organization which benifits from United Way money.  Is this organization anti gun today?  (Not 5 years ago, but today is what I'm asking).

I don't know about a "list" per se, but the United Way has cut off all funding to the Boy Scouts of America; a pro-gun, pro-hunting, pro-values organization. As a result, the United Way gets exactly zero dollars from me....

I would always take the money I would have donated to the United Way and donated it directly to the Boy Scouts of America.  I knew where it went.

Why donate to an organization that distributes money?  Donate to a specific cause/group.  You know 100% of your money goes to that group. Many companies will match individual donations to specific groups.

In some instances, most of the donations go for 'administrative costs' of the organization getting your money, the actual charity sees little of it.  check carefully before you give.

My company also uses the United Way and I gave a donation.  Then someone pointed out the MANY organizations that directly conflict with our rights.

Bottomline, don't give to the United Way  Select groups you feel comfortable donating to.

I quit giving money to the United Way when they stopped funding of the Boy Scouts of America!
Shortly after that they increased funding for Planned Parenthood.

'Nuff said!

Dude, they are very liberal, and so are many of the groups they fund on your behalf. You'd be better off donating directly by yourself.

I used to work for an accounting company that took care of the local chapter of the United Way. Those guys blow wads of cash on stupid crap. I remember them spending over $150,000 for four copiers so that they can have a copier for each floor. The VP's were being paid in excess of half a million dollars each. Last time I remember, barely 3% of all donations were being used for any kind of charities. They suck, I can't believe the NFL supports them.
One of the reasons why companies are pressuring their employees to donate is simply because some companies get kick backs from these donations. You give to United Way and the company gets part of these funds. Sucks, huh?

My personal favorite is the "Salvation Army."  Very low salaries to their personnel and most of the money seems to go to actually those in need.

I would like to congratulate those folks posting above me.  It's gratifying to see people thinking for themselves and actually controlling their donations by direct giving.

Of course this board is mostly people by folks able to think and act without guidance - gun-owning scum that we are !!!

Politics aside, you should never give a dime to the United Way because they're out and out crooks!!!  These crooks have been skimming a seriously large percentage of the take for years.  CEO William Aramony and many other UW Directors have been convicted of fraud over the years.  And they're still doing it.

The United Way apparently decides in each area which charities are supported.  My understanding is that the Boy Scouuts in Austin are still funded.

Lazyengineer, I understand the UW pressure.  My prior employer even stepped up and gave an extra day off if you met your/their "Fair Share" goal of giving.  I learned that you can specify where your dollars are applied within the UW family of charities.  I directed the money that I was giving to BSA anyway through the UW.  My employer was happy that I helped meet their goals, my VP was happy that I helped him look like he could hire team players,  BSA got the money, and I received an extra day off.  I considered it a win.

Hope this helps.

My wife works for a not for profit, the UW, when they finally give them the money, is missing alot of administrative costs. I don't like any group that pressures me, no monney going there!

If you felt pressured to donate, what I have done in the pass is to donate something like a one-time $25, that your boss is happy you are not out of a lot of money, and contribute to charities that reflect your values.

I do not give to the United Way either for many of the reasons stated above.  They do not support the Boy Scouts and the execs who "work" there make obscene salaries for a "charity" organization.  Further, many of their administrative cost are very questionable.

My employer is also a major supporter of the United Way - they just put the posters up for the annual fund raising drive (they have an auction and also solicit everyone to contribute from their paycheck directly).  Not being a "laydown yes man" I have no problems explaining to my fellow coworkers and managers why I do not contribute to the UW.  Actually, after I have explained the truth about the UW most people stop giving (my boss used to give blindly but now he knows the truth and does not give).

You should never give money blindly - do the research and make sure your contribution is really helping those in need.

If you feel like you politically must make a token donation, specify that it goes to the NRA Foundation. You won't find it on any of the printed lists, but if you ask they have to tell you the code for it.

It's been awhile since I ran across U-Way BS, but I remember working at a casino a long time ago where if you gave, you got a little sticker to go on your name badge and if you didn't, you didn't.  And the pressure was HEAVY to give, especially to let them at your paycheck so they could grab a few bucks each payday.  Because I hate being pressured, I didn't give them a damn thing.  Then later I read about the U-Way president flying first class and blowing money like it was someone else's.  Oh wait, it WAS someone else's . . .

Overall, the combined circumstances of the above makes me think the U-Way sucks.

Drive to your local United Way office and get a list of the organizations they give to. Now drive to a couple of the organizations offices. Why does the United Way have a much better building than the organizations? Donate directly and bypass the United Way.

BTW, the United Way does NOT give money to Planned Parenthood by choice. If you send a check to the United Way and designate it for PP is the only way they will donate to PP, of general contributions to the UW, none of that goes to PP.

When I was in bootcamp we were told matter of factly that we would pledge a donation so as to meet the Company's drive goal, 100%.  If not, pack your bag, cause you would be getting sent back a week in training.  As an E-1, I made $92.50 a week.  That really chapped my ass.  Because I knew my money was getting pissed away, even back then.

I've had a few employers pressure me to give to those crooks since then.  Never have.  Not since bootcamp.  Never will, not again.

United Way, and many other "charitable non-profit" organizations have very high administrative cost-read salary-.  I know of a director of a small homeless shelter who has an annual salary of over $250,000.
I suggest you give directly to the organization of your choice.
BTW... Salvation Army has one of the lowest admin. cost and highest service of all the major outfits.  I Also give to the Red Cross.

NFW. Around here there was a big scandal a couple years ago about some UW execs skimming excess $ from the charity for their personal use. Their administrative costs are extremely high so not much money actually goes for charitable uses. My employer used to demand that we donate our "Fair Share" to UW (as a payroll deduction) and I would conveniently lose my donor papers each year for a couple years. I dug up some info on how the money was used by UW and a couple of other charities of my choice which were much more frugal with their money. I told my boss that I WOULD give money to charity but it would be to a charity I chose and not one that he told me I had to give to. I still give to the charities of my choice but my company no longer even asks its employees to give to UW.

Tell your boss you will pledge Xdollars to a charity of your choosing. If your boss/company is anti-gun you could then donate to something like the NRA Whittington Center. It is a legitimate charity and the focus is on shooting sports and hunting. What a great way to get your digs in and still fulfill your donation obligation.

I, too, work for a very large organization and being a principal of the company, I am "highly encouraged" to set an example for our associates when it comes to UW giving.

If you work for a company that solicits it employees to donate to UW through a workplace giving program, here is what to do:

On the donation form, there will be a section for you to write in a specific organization (and its address) to whom you would like your donation to go.

There are two specific 501(c)(3) organizations that are fully tax-deductible, eligible for donations through the UW, and support our gun rights.

They are:

The NRA Foundation
http://www.nrafoundation.org/docs/wkplace.html

Gun Owners Foundation
http://www.gunowners.com/

Click on either of the links above to go to their websites for further information and for the address to include on your UW donation form.

This way you can be good corporate citizen AND still contribute to a worthwhile organization that supports our second amendment rights!

That's too bad - Planned Parenthood is a noble organization that does good work and offers reproductive choices to women for free.  The Boy Scouts, on the other hand, are religious bigots.

That's the way I felt when I saw all the namby-pamby other stuff posted on the board at work.
I pored over the brochure provided and found that the NRA is in the list!
I promptly filled out the paperwork and have been donating $25 a month for a couple of years now...
The United Way gives me a chance to easily contribute via paycheck deduction.
When the opportunity comes this year, I'll ask to put up some information so others can plainly see the NRA is also included.
Check out your pamphlets and be sure to look for the NRA as a donation.

The first time I shot a gun was at a week long Boy Scout camp and as a troop we had shooting activities all the time.  ALL of my leaders were life NRA members.  My first merrit badge was citizenship in the Nation.  I learned more about the founding of this country and the constitiution at one week of scout camp than in 16 years of school and college.  Say what you may about "religious bigotry" but you could not give to a more Freedom loving group than the Boy Scouts of America.  They need the money now more than ever due to all the politically correct groups cutting any funding of the Boy Scouts.

Wrong on both counts.  Planned Parenthood pushes abortions and that's all.  They're not in the "choice" business.  Boy Scouts = religious bigots?  It is to laugh.

Here's my UW story.

Back when I was 13 (the earths crust was still cooling)  I worked at a UW function, it was a play, selling soft drinks and chips.  We sold the stuff during rehersals, and the actual play.  The whole thing lasted abot six weeks. We (my buddy and I) were paid the profits from the sales. Which came out to about 80 bucks each.

Before we were paid, but after working for 6 weeks, we were told you MUST give 10% to the UW. We couldn't get our money unless we did this.

Well folks, that was the first and last 8 bucks I ever gave the ba$tards.

Don't give em a cent.  They are crooks!

Steel_Rat,

Can you provide any support for your claim of "The Boy Scouts, on the other hand, are religious bigots".  They do ask that you believe in a God, but I have yet to see any other group so accommodating as to which God.

As to the future of gun rights, BSA (and other youth groups such as 4H) are the key to having future shooters.  Without the exposure to firearms that BSA provides there will be far fewer shooters that care to fight for our rights.  As Justy pointed out, the BSA provides many youths their first opportunity to shoot. And they do it proudly!

I give DIRECTLY to our local Boy Scout troop, and not to the politically correct UW. My son benefitted greatly from his years in Scouting, and I would like to help others do the same. We give cash, returnable bottles, scrap metal, and ammo for the shooting programs.  Many other parents of present and former Scouts do the same.

Even if you specify which charity your money goes to, the UW still skims 18-20% for "administrative purposes".  Why not bypass the UW and give 100% to your charity of choice.

I get pressured at work every year also and we are required to attended their beg sessions.  I'm sure they will try to capitalize on the Sept. 11 tragedies this year.

I double my contribution every year:  $0x2=0

My company was also very pro United Way, as are most of our customers.  They really pressure the employees into giving through payroll deductions.

One day they called us into a meeting, but instead, it was our mgr and a United Way rep, gave us the line, and tried to get us to sign over part of our hard earned money each month.

I stood up, announced loudly that the UW did not support the Boy Scouts over the homosexual scoutmaster issue.  Not being a homophobe, but being a big supporter of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, I said I would just give my money directly.  I laid the sign-up card on the table, and walked out.  So did most (90%)of the other employees.

I did not make brownie points that day.  I was labeled a trouble maker, and found out that after that I had an entry in my file that I was "difficult to work with."

Some things you do not compromise.

Give to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.  Your money will go to good use.

The Boy Scouts will buy Daisy Air Rifles and BB's with it for their summer camps.  (I have taught this in the past)
