I have the Maxpedition attache.
Actually it's the "tactical" attache but I don't care for the "tactical" moniker.

1 of: Pelican 1500 Watertight Hard Case with Pick 'N Pluck Foam - Desert Tan

1 of: Pelican Shoulder Strap for 1470 and 1490 Case

I drilled holes on each side fore the strap and it is great.

I ended up with a Alienware Backpack. I had a problem finding one that would fit a 17.1 laptop. Check out there website!!

I just picked up a hardsided gun case desgined to lay four pistols flat.  The laptop fits in it like a glove.

I just bought a Lightfighter RAID for this very purpose.  The term "overkill" is not in my vocabulary

Measure your computer and make damn sure it will fit within the inside dimensions of the bag. Add on 1/2" or 1" just to be sure.

Myself, I got an HP Livestrong messenger bag.
The bag has good padding, and it came with a laptop sleeve inside which is also thickly padded. The bag isn't too bulky, but it gives good protection and has plenty of room and pockets/compartments.
