Yes, the Navy is still using the M14.

070417-N-2659P-063 ARABIAN SEA (April 17, 2007) - Lt. Jason Parmley, assigned to weapons department, fires an M-14 rifle during a live-fire exercise on the flight deck of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). John C. Shortest lived service rifle!

Too heavy!

Not ergonomic enough!

Hard to maintain!

(I do so love the M14 platform!)

I love my AR-15 for punching holes in paper but if I had meaningful targets I would reach for the M1A or an M1 Garand.

Have people actually argued that????

As much as I love my AR, the M1A is easier to disassemble and doesn't have all the tiny pieces-parts that the AR has.  I mean, who here hasn't lost the cotter pin while field-stripping an AR in the "field."  Hell, I keep plenty of spares handy just because I sometimes lose them at home.

I've heard that since I first bought my M1a because there aren't as many gewgaws to hang on an M1a as there are the AR* and because things like swapping out the barrel aren't as easy as the AR. Maybe I should have said "harder to upgrade" or something like that.

*of course I learned there are TONS of things you can slap on an M1a yourself (I've upgraded the bolt stops and installed new target sights and unitized gas cylinders on mine) ... and if you get a SAGE stock you also can slap on all of the same things they put on ARs...

The M14 is perfect for ship defence.

Image a small boat comming up to your ship to plant a mine.  Would you feel adequate plinking it with 5.56x45 (.223) or punching it with 7.62x51 (.308)?

I'd much rather have a 25mm.  But I make do with a 240B

kachunk kacunk kachunk kachunk followed shortly by giggles

ETA upon further thought into the subject, I'd actually much rather have a cheese-whiz (CIWS) of whatever the most recent block is.   Whaaaaaaaaaaaa

And to get back on topic, the -16 may be lighter and easier to carry more ammo for (ammo is life after all)  but to me, the -14 seems more like a shooters rifle to me

I managed to go an entire combat tour in Afghanistan without losing a cotter pin or any other parts.

I would always put the small parts in my hat while I was cleaning my rifle.

What is the difference between the M14 and M1A - the happy switch?
Link Posted: 4/18/2007 11:53:54 AM EDT

Ah yes, I loved the M14 shoots on my ship (CVN 68, USS NIMITZ). We gave our watch standers a choice on whether they fired the M16 or M14. We didn't have a huge crowd for the M14. All the Gunner's Mates and Aviation Ordnancemen had to qualify on it since we used it for line throwing and they supplemented our M2HBs if we were to have a target get within our T&E cut outs. In Sigonella we had 2 M14s and roughly 80 M16s and we were alloted the same amount of ammo every year for the M14s that we were for the M16s. Needless to say, the M14s were used as range toys and the happy switch was used often

I could have sworn that I just watched a documentary about the USS Stennis.  It seems that is was scrapped and sunk off of the west coast of FL to be used as a artificial reef and really neat dive site.

They must have raised it for the shoot.

EDIT:  Nevermind...it was the Oriskany that I was thinking of.

I've heard that you guys have somebody hold the spool of shot line while another shoots.  Any truth to that?  Or is it like the Mk 87 LTAK for the -16's with a clamp on canister?  I'll stick to the SLTG and a 15oz personally

There is a decent looking female soldier here in Iraq who carries one around.  For the life of me I cant figure out why.  As far as I knew, only combat arms support that weapon.

Anyways, I'm looking into getting one when I get home, especially now that I'm spending an extra three months here.

Mostly.  The M14 is a forged receiver built for the military, the M1A is a cast receiver made for Springfield Armory, Inc.  There's at least one company making new forged receivers for the M14 and selling them to the military.

All followed by giggles and a shit eating grin of course

We have a -14 for a match/morale rifle at one of the local units.  Checked it out for a weekend a few months ago to shoot in a local competition, and then dragged it up (and what was left of my wallet after buying ammo) to a Houston Crew shoot.  Happy switch welded though  Saw one in a big armory (and some videos floating around the 'net) with a short barrel, Sage stock, and a bunch of other goodies.  Happy switch not welded  Any clue what it is?  Does it have an official designation, or are they Crane-specials?

I never understood why some commands did this. My CWO2 on the Nimitz (a Torpedoman BTW) swore that a full mag wore out the spring. We were only allowed to load the M16 mags to 20 even though the M14 mags were loaded to full capacity. Dude was a flippin retard. It didn't matter how much I told him that it wasn't true, "Well shipmate, I think it wears down the spring so we're only going to load them to 20." Have I ever mentioned I'm not a big fan of Torpedoman's Mates?

GM's are just as bad. It won't matter in about a year anyway. GMs and TMs will become one rate: GM.

IIRC and with a little searching I think one is A130 and the other is A131. One is belted and the other is not.

Although, we used to de-link tracers to use to mark targets with the M14s.
